Employment Category Regular Job Summary This is an Internal Employment Opportunity This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Sciences Research Technician 1 position for the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center (SOREC) in Central Point at Oregon State University (OSU). This position at Oregon State University, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center (SOREC) in Central Point, OR will assist and collaborate with researchers, primarily involving plant pathology research projects in tree fruits, wine grapes, and other commercial crops. tasks will include assisting in setting up trials at orchard and vineyards, maintaining trial sites, field data collection, and assisting in setting up laboratory experiments for plant pathology research. Key Responsibilities 40% Field Work Assist in conducting field research trials on diseases of tree fruits and wine grapes through operation of farm machineries such as sprayers for disease management trials, surveying for diseases, and collecting, processing, and preserving disease samples. Record and organize data from field trials. 40% Laboratory Work Provide technical assistance in a plant pathology laboratory, including but not limited to media preparation for culturing bacterial and fungal pathogens of tree fruits and wine grapes, processing field samples for pathogen isolation, microbial culture collection, and data entry into electronic format. Utilize and operate various laboratory equipment such as an autoclave, pH meter, laminar flow hood, microscopes, PCR and qPCR thermocyclers, microcentrifuge, gel electrophoresis etc. 15% Lab Housekeeping Perform routine housekeeping tasks in the lab including but not limited to maintaining laboratory cleanliness, monitoring and maintaining constant supply of laboratory consumables and reagents, and assisting with purchase orders. 5% Miscellaneous Participate in group meetings, discussions, necessary safety training and SOREC staff events, and training new student adjuncts. What We Require Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and practice. What You Will Need Demonstrated capability to lgain and follow scientific protocols Positive attitude to work in a team environment Possess/acquire pesticide applicator's license within 6 months of hire date This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. What We Would Like You to Have A Bachelor's Degree in Plant Science, Microbiology, or related field Demonstrated capability in performing molecular analysis such as DNA extraction, PCR amplification, gene sequencing etc. Proficient in basic lab techniques such as making buffers, media preparation, centrifugation, pipetting, and weighing Demonstrated capability in data organization, management, analysis, and communications using Microsoft Office suite or similar software Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Working Conditions / Work Schedule Research will be conducted at SOREC and at grower-collaborator field sites that will require travel using a SOREC vehicle. Work may require lifting, pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs. The capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions for an extended period of time is required.
