Organizational Unit Overview The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, adjunct Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, adjunct Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, adjunct Dean for Academic Success and the adjunct Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational practices for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in
Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located all over North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job tasks The purpose of this position is to provide clinical support to the dentist, dental residents and dental students in the School of Dental Medicine clinics and Community Service Learning Centers.

Assist 4-handed dentistry. The dental adjunct is responsible for patient preparation and patient flow. This position accesses patient information, charts as directed by dental students, dental residents and faculty dentist, monitors patients blood pressure and sedation as required. The adjunct participates in dental exams and procedures. The adjunct follows OSHA standards for hand washing, masking, gloving and disposal of contaminants. The adjunct monitors patients as they are receiving treatment. The adjunct performs dental x-rays as ordered by the dentist. The adjunct transports patients as needed. This Advanced Position will also have responsibilities related to prepping patients for dental surgical procedures to include starting IV lines and monitoring sedation. The responsibilities above are expected for dental adjuncts of all banding levels. Specifically, the advanced DA position will have additional responsibilities related to prepping patients for dental surgical procedures, starting IV lines, and monitoring conscious sedation. By discipline, this advanced dental adjunct position will spend 20% of their time in Oral Surgery, 20% of their rime in Faculty Practice and Advanced Education in General Dentistry and 20% of their time in Digital Dentistry. This position must be proficient in all aspects of digital dentistry and be able to scan, design, mill, stain, and glaze and have all ceramic restorations ready for delivery and cementation by the treating dentist. expertise of ceramic mills/printers and ovens is required.

The Dental adjunct is responsible for monitoring sterilization of equipment. Proper care must be taken of all dental equipment and instruments and this position maintains a total inventory. Equipment and instrumentation used by dental adjuncts, i.e., syringes and machines need to be in proper working order, and meet the requirements of established practices in order to meet OSHA requirements. This position is responsible for ordering supplies as needed. The dental adjunct is expected to efficiently use the instrumentation required for dentistry. connected dental lab responsibilities involving digital dentistry machine maintenance, to include milling machine, burs, water line changes, and cleaning, In addition, the adjunct must be proficient in the use of the computer to access the electronic dental record. Medical record files must be maintained with absolute confidentiality in conformity with HIPAA guidelines.

The dental adjunct works with all categories of personnel, medical (dental) records, business office, lab, x-ray and physicians. everyday contact is made with fellow employees through verbal and written means. The dental adjunct also has contact with outside agencies to include other dental offices, physician's offices, Divisions of the School of Dental Medicine, insurance companies, pharmacies, supply companies and the general public. The dental adjunct also performs secretarial tasks as needed.

Minimum Education/practice High school diploma or equivalency and completion of an accredited dental assisting program; or equivalent combination of training and practice.
