About Our Sites:
Christ Church(located at 2nd and Market St.) was founded in 1695 as the first Episcopal Church of The United States. Many early American patriots and members of the Continental Congress attended services here. Two signers of the Declaration of Independence, Robert Morris and James Wilson, are buried on its hallowed grounds. Christ Church further serves as a site of significance in Philadelphia's history of slavery and abolition. It's location alone places the church within walking distance of the waterfront where thousands of Africans first arrived upon American soil after surviving the transatlantic slave trade. Today, Christ Church stands as an active Episcopal parish and national shrine. We aim to ignite a revolutionary spirit in our community by interpreting 320+ years of our ever-evolving story.
The Burial Groundsare one of America's most unique Colonial and Revolution-era graveyards, with 1,400 markers on two beautiful acres right in the heart of historic Philadelphia. The Grounds serve as the final resting place of some of America's most prominent leaders, including Benjamin Franklin and four other signers of the Declaration of Independence.
The Neighborhood Houseopened its doors in 1915. Information technology was originally built by Christ Church to serve low-earnings residents of Old City. Since then, the building has functioned as a soup kitchen, a meeting house, an athletic facility, and a performance venue-in the late 1990s, local performing artists gravitated towards the brick-walled gymnasium on the uppermost floor. The program of Neighborhood House solidified around that community demand, and the theater advanced with it
