Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill four part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Hop Lab Technician positions for Food Science and Technology at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Hop Laboratory Technician is responsible for following quantitative procedures to accurately perform chemical hop analysis in a timely fashion. This position supports the Brewing Lab and the Hop Breeding Program through the evaluation of new hop varieties and quantitative analysis of research hops.

This person is expected to follow Standard Operating Procedures in carrying out analysis, focus on safety, maintain impeccable records, communicate with the graduate student lab manager, and represent the brewing lab in a professional manner. This position involves training during the Spring term of 2024 (April-May 2024), and work begins September 2024. Summer 2024 availcapability is preferred, but not required.

Decisions are made in conjunction with the graduate student manager and principle investigator along with appropriate manuals (SOPs) and following well-established guidelines.

   » Preparing samples of HPLC and GC analyses
   » Operating HPLC and/or GC

   » Inventory of incoming hop samples
   » Keeping records of samples and results
   » Cleaning lab equipment
   » Cleaning laboratory
   » Running analytical assays on beer samples
   » Ensures a safe working environment
   » Represents the Brewing Lab, Department, and College at various functions
   » Other tasks as assigned

   » Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
   » Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
   » Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
   » High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
   » Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
   » Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
   » Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
   » Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered ?full-time? by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
   » Food Science and Technology major or minor preferred
   » Chemistry 324, B or better, worked in a chemistry laboratory or in a lab performing quantitative assays
   » Work study eligible preferred (listed on financial aid award letter)
   » Summer availcapability (Hop harvest is in August, so there is work available in late summer)
   » Prior brewing practice in a commercial setting
   » Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
