Al-Bustan Seeds of CultureRooted in Arab arts, culture, and language, Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture offers artistic and educational programming that enriches knowledge and celebrates diversity, while supporting the pursuit and affirmation of Arab American cultural identity and playing a constructive civic function within broader American society.SUMMARY Al-Bustan News Service is seeking an ambitious reporter to join our team for a Journalism Fellowship. The Journalism Fellow will produce outstanding articles for our news site, covering Arab-American and Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) communities in the Greater Philadelphia area. RESPONSIBILITIES We seek an individual with strong editorial judgment, a background in news, strong communication expertise, attention to detail, and an capability to identify and pursue local news stories. This position requires a clear knowledge of journalistic ethics and standards, with a commitment to factual accuracy, an adherence to deadlines, and the capability to work with a team. The Fellow will work remotely and report to the Editor. The Fellowship spans 6 months from the hire date, with the possibility of continued work with Al-Bustan News Service. Responsibilities include: » Report two news articles per month. (500-word minimum) » Monitor news and generate significant story ideas that include a wide variety of voices and perspectives. » Report stories assigned by the News Service Editor. » Pitch news stories to the News Service Editor. » Collaborate with Al-Bustan's News Service Editor, other Journalism Fellows, staff, and leadership abilities. » Adhere to Al-Bustan's editorial standards. QUALIFICATIONS » Bachelor's degree or equivalent » Minimum of 1-2 years of reporting practice » Excellent news judgment » capability to write stories following AP guidelines » capability to work under deadline » capability to work collaboratively » Strong communication and organizational expertise » Passionate about news significant to the Arab-American and larger SWANA communities » Commitment to independent media » capability to cover news stories within the Philadelphia area. » capability to attend periodic meetings at our Philadelphia offices. » candidates must have valid US work authorization » Being bilingual (Arabic/English) is a plus FELLOWSHIP DATES 6 months, beginning?Spring 2024 COMPENSATION Fellows are paid $625 per article with a maximum compensation during the Fellowship of $7,500.
