Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one or two part time Student Technical Positions for the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University (OSU). This position will include full-time summer employment and part-time employment during the school year (approximately 20 hours/week).

Performs tasks in support of Small Fruit Virology and National Clean Plant programs, working with elite clonal berry germplasm and viruses of small fruit crops including blueberry, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, and grape in the Small Fruit Labs. This job will entail basic laboratory maintenance, plant tissue culture, greenhouse and screenhouse maintenance, basic microbiology and molecular biology.

Position tasks
   »60% Preparation of buffers and media. Lab ware cleaning and autoclaving. Performance of laboratory procedures including plant tissue culture and laboratory procedures including sample preparation for virus testing. Potential to lgain virus testing procedures including ELISA and RT-PCR.
   »40% Assist with greenhouse and outdoor plant care (watering, transplanting, fertilizing potted berry plants; potting media preparation; pot washing)

   » Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
   » Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
   » Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
   » High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
   » Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
   » Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
   » Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
   » Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered ?full-time? by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications
   » You must be a student and have an interest in the plant sciences, have a good work ethic, and be willing to work under various environmental conditions (lab, greenhouse, and field).
   » A availability to lgain new techniques/concepts and the capability work with a diverse scientific team.
   » Coursework in related fields is desirable - including, but not limited to: Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Horticulture, and Microbiology.
   » An interest in working with plants and plant viruses is preferred, but not required.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
   » Part time to full time availcapability in the summer is preferred.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
   » This is a continuing, year-round position. This position will work 10-20 hours per week during the school year, with the potential for more hours in the summer. Work hours are flexible during regular business hours, Monday through Friday.
   » Laboratory: climate controlled, ergonomic lab bench seating.
   » Greenhouse: entails working with horticultural potting media; greenhouse is between 50? and 85?F; concrete floors.
