Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill two full-time Temporary Biological Sciences Research Technician 1 positions for the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University (OSU).

The position is located on OSU campus but may involve work in the field (nearby and in Eastern OR), which requires driving to the field location.

The project is to establish research on grass and fungal diversity and abundance in Oregon grasslands (including grass seed production, turf, pasture, and natural areas). The incumbent will help with lab work (preparing materials, identifying grass specimens, recording disease symptoms and grass traits, culturing fungi from leaves, simple DNA extraction using a kit, PCR) and some field work (collecting grass samples), under the supervision of Dr. Fletcher Halliday. Potential field work will involve driving to diverse field sites, walking 100-meter transects, and collecting grass specimens.

The incumbent will also have the opportunity to assist other lab members with ecology and plant pathology experiments in the lab and field.

Field work in Eastern Oregon may require overnight stays in rustic field conditions.

Key Responsibilities 80% Lab. Preparing materials, identifying grasses, recording disease symptoms, measuring grass traits, culturing fungi, simple DNA extraction (using a kit), PCR. This includes making media and preparing petri dishes in a sterile hood.

20% Field. Assisting with data and specimen collection. This involves driving to the field, potentially interacting with landowners, walking 100-meter transects, and collecting specimens for lab work.

What We Require
Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and practice.
What You Will Need capability to follow directions and make independent decisions regarding lab and field research.

Commitment to safety, quality of work, and professionalism

This position may require driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030
