Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time, seasonal (June - July) Biological Sciences Research Technician 2 position for the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).

This position will be located in Medford, Oregon.

College of Agricultural Sciences faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality academic, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning opportunities. FWCS is an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Department is composed of approximately 300 staff, including academic faculty, research adjuncts, classified staff, graduate students, and temporary staff. Over $8 million of externally funded grants and contracts are received each year in support of science focused on basic ecological research, conservation, and sustainable use of fish and wildlife and their habitats. The Department is the largest in the College of Agricultural Sciences, with over 1000 students in 8 degree and certificate programs, including one Bachelor of Science degree, five graduate degrees, and two graduate certificates. We are a vibrant department that promotes a supportive ?family? atmosphere for all students and employees.

Biological Science Research Technicians are required to conduct surveys for northern spotted owls to obtain occupancy and reproductive data as part of a short-term monitoring program. Additional work past the primary sampling period may include the deployment of ARU's, vegetation sampling (July 1-August 31), or post-field season data management (September 1-October 31).

Key Responsibilities 85% Field Research
tasks include:
   » Conduct surveys for Northern Spotted Owls by confirming owl presence and identity using auditory detections and visual observation of color bands following well-established survey protocol. Collect owl pellets to determine food habits. Possible assistance capturing and banding Northern Spotted Owls.
   » Maintain accurate field notes and enter data in the field using the FieldMaps app on handheld tablets.
   » Describe vegetation characteristics, floristics, and physiography of riparian areas and owl roost and nest locations in project area. Working with online vegetation maps and aerial photographs.
   » Records and summarizes research observations for team lead.
   » Work closely with personnel of the U.S. Forest Service, BLM, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Oregon Dept. of Forestry, private landowners and other agencies.
   » Take care of and maintain field equipment and state-owned rental vehicles.
   » Deploy, maintain, and collect ARU's from field locations.
   » Other tasks as assigned.

15% Office Work
tasks include:
   » Completion of required in-person and on-line safety and animal handler training as assigned.
   » Use of desktop or laptop computers, tablets, and smart phones, to enter data, map owl locations, maintain field notes.
   » Coordinate work with crewmates and manager.
What We Require
Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of practice related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and practice.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule This job requires driving state-owned rental vehicles on primitive forest roads and navigating difficult terrain on foot to access survey sites and locate owls during both daytime and nighttime surveys, and conduct vegetation sampling during daytime hours. Employees must have good night and color vision and average or above hearing. The employee works independently and must be able to follow an established protocol in the field.

The employee also must frequently work alone in remote forest areas and navigate over mountainous terrain. Orienteering expertise, including the use of maps, compass, handheld GPS units and tablets are essential to the collection of data in the field. The work is physically strenuous and involves working and hiking in rain, snow, heat, and on steep, brushy slopes while carrying a backpack with supplies weighing up to 25lbs. The employee should be comfortable performing these tasks at night, well after dark, as required. This is a full-time position, so although schedules vary with changing workloads and priorities, employees will follow an approved safety plan where team members are required to work the same four, 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday each week.

All the above tasks must be performed with a high degree of quality, uniformity, and timeliness. The employee must work as a team member and may be required to live and work in close quarters and in isolated settings for extended periods of time.
