Position Summary Information

Job Summary/Basic Function: About the function:

This position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering and Engineering Institute for Energy and Petrochemical Industries (EPI) and serves as a key leader within the College. The Director of Co-op/Internship and Career Services provides leadership abilities and direction for a comprehensive co-op/internship and career planning office with a mission to support the College of Engineering's students in making informed decisions regarding undergraduate and post graduate plans by providing resources and opportunities to encourage co-op/internship and career exploration and self-assessment. In collaboration with the Dean and staff, determines annual and continuing priorities for office, working diligently to bring these priorities to fruition. Forms and actively participates in committees charged with moving office forward on many fronts (e.g. marketing, fundraising, etc.). Leads office in strategic planning retreats and meetings. Encourages and plans professional development activities. Establishes and implements office/college/university policies. Counsels students on an individual and group basis regarding co-op/internship, career planning, and employment issues. Develops and delivers workshops and co-op/internship and career-related programs.

What You'll Do - Position tasks

   » Career Counseling and Advising:
   » Provides individual and group co-op/internship and career counseling.
   » Provides career-related seminars for interested students.
   » Identifies student needs for information and advising on co-op/internship and career planning, employment, graduate schools, and scholarships. In collaboration with staff, creates programs, services, and publications to meet those needs. | 30
   » Communication and Representation:
   » Represents the college of engineering in various professional organizations and addresses a wide variety of constituencies as chief spokesperson for college's undergraduate career planning. ·Addresses alumni groups, parents, faculty, student organizations, and other administrators on co-op/internships and career-related issues.
   » On behalf of Dean, serves on college-wide committees and represents the Dean on task forces to investigate new endeavors.
   » Frequently called upon to evaluate candidates for positions in division and to serve on search committees elsewhere within the institution. | 20
   » Program Development and Management:
   » Directs and develops the university's cooperative/internship program. ·supervises development and expansion of career discovery program. | 15
   » Event Organization and Management:
   » Organizes, sets up, and manages the highest quality career fairs. | 10
   » Financial Management and Fundraising:
   » Prepares the annual operating budget and monitors monthly activity in all career services' accounts.
   » Writes and presents grant proposals to obtain funds to support continuing programs and for the development of new projects.
   » Works in tandem with Lamar University College of Engineering fundraising efforts to develop and implement office action plan. | 10
   » Resource Management:
   » Maintains an up-to-date career resources library.
   » Maintains resumes for participating students and alumni and placement credentials for those in the field of education.
   » Maintains, posts, and/or distributes information concerning full and part-time co-ops/internships and jobs. | 10
   » Miscellaneous tasks:
   » Conducts the annual graduate employment survey.
   » Maintains membership and active involvement in professional organizations.
   » Reviews and updates annually all career services publications including the career guide, career services brochure, credential file forms, co-op forms, and graduate survey.
   » Chairs committee and helps select grant recipients. ·Creates and monitors multiple reserve funds. ·Other tasks as assigned for the benefit of the Office of Operations, College of Engineering, Engineering Institute for Energy and Petrochemical Industries (EPI), and Lamar University. | 5

Physical Requirements:

   » Lifting and Carrying: The capability to lift and move reams/boxes of paper, tables, decorations, and other supplies, weighing up to 50lbs, as necessary for job tasks.
   » Event Setup and Teardown: Must be capable of setting up and tearing down equipment and Extended Periods on Feet: This position may require long hours spent standing during events. Candidates should be able to stand, walk, and perform job tasks for extended periods.
   » Walking Campus: capability to walk around the campus, including participating in visits and camps, which may involve traversing various terrains and buildings.

Minimum Appropriate qualifications:
   » Master's degree in Engineering, Business, Human Resources or appropriate
   » 3 or more years of professional practice in university/college setting or in engineering/business in a human resources or training and development function, or a discipline whose preparation is appropriate for this position.
   » Knowledge of career counseling techniques, job trends, and career development skills.
