Our department is committed to using anthropology to understand our human species and help solve contemporary problems to make life better for humans in many different locales. We emphasize the appliccapability of anthropological theories and methods for non-academic settings like non-profit organizations, businesses, and government, and our students have the option to focus on applied anthropology for their BA or MA degrees in anthropology. There are several faculty who work on research projects in both archaeology and sociocultural anthropology in the Charlotte area. Students within the department are encouraged to work with faculty on community-located projects, service-learning practices, and field schools. Applied Anthropology majors participate in internships with local organizations such as the local area food bank. The College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences focuses on student-centered teaching, innovative research and community collaborations that prepare our graduates to help solve the pressing problems of our world today. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional tasks requiring leadership abilities and mentoring of faculty, administrative skills to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction. Essential tasks and Responsibilities Required Appropriate qualifications: Tenured rank at UNC Charlotte; a PhD in Anthropology or related field from an accredited institution; an exemplary record of publication, teaching, and service in the field of anthropology, appropriate to rank; and capcapability of strong leadership abilities in undergraduate/graduate education and in research, including the capability to facilitate faculty efforts at seeking external grant support. The candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to the engagement and success of the Department's students, staff, and faculty. Minimum practice/Education UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
