Job Summary Ship Operations with the College of Earth, Oceanic, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, hourly academic wage positions as Relief Master. Appointments are anticipated to last up to one year from appointment date.

These positions will be located in Newport, Oregon.

The Relief Master provides managerial, administrative, managery, professional, technical, and operational support to the Research Vessel (R/V) Elakha.

The Relief Master assumes major responsibilities for the conduct of seagoing scientific operations of the R/V Elakha and acts as the point of contact for science users of the vessel. The Relief Master is in overall command of all personnel and operations aboard the vessel. This position supports ocean research and helps broaden the expertise of the marine and atmospheric environments at OSU and other research institutions through education and research.

Key Responsibilities 50% - Serves as Master of the vessel at sea by navigating using visual, electronic means such as radar, Global Positioning System (GPS), Fathometer, Electronic Chart System, as well as other means such as charts and navigation publications. Maneuvers the vessel as necessary to conduct oceanographic work, maintains the vessel's log, and operates vessel equipment including winches, A-frame, crane, and capstans.

20% - Plans and coordinates, in cooperation with the Port Captain and Ship Operations Coordinator, scientific operations on the vessel, including handling sometimes large, heavy, and/or complex pieces of equipment over-the-side. Confers with the chief scientist and other members of the scientific party concerning the planned or continuing scientific work (as described in written cruise plans, verbally, or as standard work previously done on the vessel) to assure Information technology is accomplished effectively, safely, and within the capabilities of the crew and embarked scientists. supervises the scientific operations by occasionally providing guidance to scientific personnel or students who possess little training or practice in sea going operations. Serves as custodian for science party safety and consent documentation for the duration of each voyage.

10% - Plans, supervises, and conducts, in cooperation with the Port Engineer, maintenance of the vessel, equipment and safety equipment. Contributes to the specifications for the biannual haul-outs, arranging for contractor repair of machinery and equipment. Conducts maintenance and minor repair of the main engine, auxiliary generator, fuel, hydraulic, water systems, winches and A-frames. Regularly updates the computerized maintenance logs for the vessel.

10% - Supervises one regular classified position and one to five intermittent relief classified workers. supervises the hiring of and supervises temporary and/or intermittent employees to fill in as needed. Trains and supervises both at-sea and in-port work including vessel maintenance.

10% - Performs other tasks as required, such as adapting scientific equipment for use on the Elakha, assisting in the loading and securing of equipment, and providing other support to Ship Operations which includes performing occasional in-port work on other OSU vessels.

What You Will Need * Possession of a valid United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential as Master of Vessels of 100 Tons (Near Coastal) or higher license.
* Meet United States Coast Guard (USCG) drug testing requirements.
* Current Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) as appropriate to this position.
* capability to obtain Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
* capability to obtain a passport.
* This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have * Mechanical, electrical, electronic, welding, or other expertise applicable to vessel maintenance and repair.
* 1 year of practice in research vessel operations.
* Beginning and advanced First Aid and CPR Certification.
* Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule * This position is required to work at sea onboard the R/V Elakha, on research cruises that may last from a few hours to an overnight voyage before returning to port, in ocean and weather conditions which are highly variable. * The incumbent must not be incapacitated by sea-sickness.
* Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation, therefore, weekend and holiday work may be required. Shift and/or work assignments may change located on operational needs.
* As part of continuing COVID 19 mitigation efforts, the unit may require PCR testing as well as quarantine and self-reporting for up to fourteen days prior to employment.
* The capability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
