Primary Purpose of Department The Williams States Lee College of Engineering has approximately 4000 students in five departments. Research awards in COE represent nearly a third of the university total. The College of Engineering prides itself on its excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, and is home to several interdisciplinary research centers: the Energy Production Infrastructure Center (EPIC), the Center for Biomedical Engineering Systems (CBES), the Center for Precision Metrology (CPM), the Infrastructure, Design, Environment and Sustaincapability Center (IDEAS), the Battery Complexity, Autonomous Vehicle and Electrification Research Centre (BATT CAVE) and the Charlotte Aviation Innovation and Research Institute (Charlotte AIR)

Description of Work
Assists Associate Dean or Dean in department operations. Supervises and coordinates various department activities. Serves as a resource and referral source for students seeking various types of assistance. Serves on University councils, committees, work groups, and other bodies. Works as a liaison for the local community and especially local bodies of higher education. Develops and implements strategic planning specific to programs within the department including marketing and staffing. Collaborates with the Dean and other department entities to supervise the academic program and ensure quality faculty and student support services. Provides direction and assistance in preparation of budget requests; monitors budgeting expenditures at all levels.
Essential tasks and Responsibilities The adjunct Dean for Student practices supervises the college's Office of Student Development and Success (OSDS). She/he is responsible for continuously improving the quality and diversity of the freshman class, facilitating prosperous student transitions into the college, conducting student orientations, providing a positive first year practice, creating prosperous out-of-classroom learning communities, guiding student professional development, and providing assessment support for achieving programmatic goals and student learning results.

The adjunct Dean actively participates in strategic planning. She/he provides leadership abilities for student recruiting, advising, and peer mentoring and tutoring. The adjunct Dean supervises faculty and staff delivering the introductory freshman course, directing the residential freshman learning community, running the Industrial Solution Laboratory, providing liaison to industry, registering and advising students, and delivering a student orientation program. The adjunct Dean collaborates with the University Scholarship Office and departments to manage and award scholarships. She/he works with student organizations, alumni groups, and external constituencies to engage students, alumni and community partners. The adjunct Dean manages the OSDS budget and personnel, including hiring and professional development. The adjunct Dean teaches courses and represents the college at conferences, university planning meetings, and at community functions as needed. The adjunct Dean reports to the Dean and the Dean can delegate other responsibilities as needed.

The primary objectives for the adjunct Dean for Student practices are to:
(1) facilitate prosperous student transitions into the college from high school, community college, other colleges and universities, and/or work; (2) develop a first year multidisciplinary curriculum which helps students develop success strategies and builds their professional identity early. This includes teaching sections of ENGR 1201 and ETGR 1202 and supervising freshman Lecturers and Professors of Practice; (3) continuously improve the quality and diversity of our student population and guiding the Engage ME program; (4) enhance our students' preparation for the workplace and/or graduate school with a professional development curriculum meeting the needs of all of the college's departments; (5) manage the Freshman Learning Community including developing a curriculum for a residential population of students; (6) create a robust, collaborative out-of-classroom learning community; (7) work with faculty to guide the Industrial Solutions Lab(ISL)/multidisciplinary Senior Design Program; and (8) supervise the college's industrial relations office. The position has primary responsibility for curriculum elements common across all of the college's departments.

The adjunct Dean teaches in the freshman program to maintain an intimate expertise of the program and provide hands-on leadership abilities. These efforts involve working closely with college faculty and students to determine needs, identify issues, and develop and implement curriculum elements consistent with the strategic plan of the college. The position supervises administrative staff, instructors/advisers in the first year program, director of recruiting, director of professional development and employer relations, and director of ISL. (12 month appointment, nontenure-track; MS degree in engineering or related discipline).

Minimum practice/Education
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education, expertise and practice Qualifications include strong leadership abilities qualities, excellent interpersonal expertise, a commitment to creating a dynamic academic environment for students and faculty, practice with accreditation requirements and program assessment, a doctorate in an engineering discipline or related field.
