Job Summary The Department of Forest Engineering, Management, and Resources invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

This position will provide support and leadership abilities within the Wildfire Analytics, Science and Planning lab at the College of Forestry at Oregon State University (the College). The College plays an important function in covering wildfire risk challenges across the Pacific Northwest by synthesizing research, developing significant analytics, and producing primary research products in coordination with partners to support decision making, strategic planning processes, adaptation to a rapidly changing environment, with a particular focus on adaptation of our relationship with fire and our wildfire management system.

The primary goal of this position is to support strategic wildfire risk reduction efforts by participating in, and sometimes leading co-produced science processes and products. This position may work on a multitude of projects within the lab, including work with the College and external partners including, but not limited to Tribes, communities, and state and federal land management agencies to:
   » Develop spatial datasets for wildfire risk analytics and provide project management of spatial data development
   » Collaboratively develop and maintain a statewide map of wildfire hazard and risk in Oregon, Washington and California
   » Support the development and application of applied wildfire risk sciences through peer-reviewed literature and other publications
   » Develop primary science supporting wildfire risk science and decision making for pre-, during, and post-fire management decisions
   » Advance ecological knowledge of the application of fire in post-fire environments,
   » Evaluate the contributions of a network of Experimental Forest and Rangelands towards wildfire risk management,
   » Integrate Indigenous Knowledge with Western Science to explore holistic adaptation strategies,
   » Work on issues surrounding wildfires in the Wildland Urban Interface in collaboration with colleagues in the College of Engineering.

Key Responsibilities Participate in research, including, but not limited to, compilation of data sets, documentation and archiving of data sets, generation of research questions, development and implementation of appropriate methodology, statistical analysis of primary and secondary data, maintenance of records and archives, interpretation of results, and development of conclusions located on research. Engage in open and respectful dialogue with fellow collaborators to advance research. (40%)

Writing and oral communication of research, including co-authoring publications. (30%)

Spatial and statistical analysis of data sets. (20%)

Maintain a leadership abilities function in the laboratory, including participating in professional development and DEI opportunities, helping organize meetings, assisting with analytical efforts, and providing mentorship to other research team members as needed. (10%)

What You Will Need
   » Ph.D. in forest science, wildfire science, watershed science, data science, environmental social science, or a closely-related field;
   » practice conducting statistical analyses and drawing significant conclusions;
   » practice using GIS software such as Esri ArcGIS Pro;
   » practice with scientific computer programming in languages such as R and Python;
   » Familiarity working with large, complex datasets;
   » Demonstrated capability to work collaboratively with a broad set of partners and stakeholders;
   » Excellent oral and written communication expertise; and capability to engage respectfully with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and practices
   » Commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the sciences.
What We Would Like You to Have
   » practice working with remote sensing data including airborne/spaceborne lidar, multispectral imagery;
   » Prior practical, coursework, and/or research practice in wildland fire
   » Prior research in watershed and community exposure to wildland fire or other natural hazards
   » Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed outlets.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule The proposed research will occur in an office setting, However, at times there will be opportunities to assist other projects with a field research component depending on interest and satisfactory progress on primary tasks. The work may require overnight travel for data collection or verification purposes, or for presentation of results. Remote work may be possible, as agreed upon by the employee and manager.
