Digital Research Infrastructure inUniversity Information and Technology is seeking a Linux Administrator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

This position is in the Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) unit within Oregon State University's University Information & (UIT) division. This position shares and supports the University's mission by assisting the University to extend all programs, teachings, research, and communication all over the world. Specifically, the Linux Administrator will be responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and optimization of our Linux servers and systems. Key responsibilities include system monitoring, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and ensuring the security and stcapability of the infrastructure. The function requires a strong knowledge of various Linux distributions, shell scripting, and networking concepts, as well as the capability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the organization's technical needs. Additionally, the Linux System Administrator will work on research data storage systems, managing and optimizing storage solutions to ensure efficient and secure data handling for our research projects.

The services provided by DRI assist the University community by facilitating transmission of knowledge and skills to its members, thereby enhancing their capability to be productive, valued, and esteemed members of the University community, serving the State of Oregon. Services are provided to students, faculty, and staff for research and academic activities, and needs, as well as to the wider Oregon higher education and government community. There are approximately 175 faculty and classified employees in UIT, as well as 150 FTE student positions. UIT administers a total budget of $35+ million.

Data: UIT commits to deliver data as a strategic institutional asset and to enable data-informed decision-making across OSU. UIT managers and staff lead by example and use data to make informed decisions at all levels in the organization. Persons in technology functions are also expected to design systems with data portcapability in mind and work within enterprise architecture and privacy guidelines.

Key Responsibilities (20%) Maintain and configure research computing infrastructure, including servers, workstations, network devices, and storage systems.

(30%) Maintain and configure research high performance cluster (HPC) in support of research activities and classroom instruction.

(15%) Install and update software and hardware components necessary for research activities, such as scientific computing software, databases, and statistical analysis tools.

(10%) Develop and implement backup, data recovery, and disaster recovery plans to ensure research data is secure and protected.

(5%) Monitor system performance and security. Resolve issues and perform regular system maintenance to keep the infrastructure up to date.

(10%) Collaborate with researchers and other technical staff to provide technical support and consultation on research projects, including advising on appropriate hardware and software tools, assisting with data management, and troubleshooting technical issues.

(5%)Stay up to date with emerging technologies and best practices in research computing.

(5%) Train staff on the use of hardware and software tools and maintain documentation on system configurations and procedures. Foster and promote the values of DEIA and demonstrate a commitment to inclusive excellence.

What You Will Need
   » Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field or equivalent work practice.
   » At least 2 years of practice in system administration, preferably in a research environment.
   » Strong knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems, as well as server hardware and software.
   » practice with virtualization technologies, cloud computing and containerization.
   » practice with scripting languages such as: PHP, Perl, Python, and Ruby.
   » Familiarity with data management and analysis software, such as MATLAB, R and Python.
   » knowledge of networking protocols and security best practices.
   » Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the capability to work collaboratively with researchers and other technical staff.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

   » May be required to work evenings or weekends during peak periods of project deadlines to ensure that technical issues are resolved in a timely manner.
   » This position is required to attend regular meetings with other Information technology staff.
   » Remote work is an option on a part-time basis, subject to approval by their manager and in compliance with OSUs flexible work arrangement policy.
   » Occasional travel may be required for training, conferences, or visits at other OSU campuses.
