Job Summary This is an Internal Employment Opportunity

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Science Research Technician 2 position for the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management at Oregon State University (OSU). This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 18 months from the appointment begin date.

This position is for the function of a field research lead and online system manager for the AIS Lab (FERM, College of Forestry) and the Penaluna Lab (PNW Research Station, USDA Forest Service), a critical component of the UPstream Regional LiDAR Model of Extent of Trout (UPRLIMET) project. This project is a collaborative effort to authoritatively describe the distribution of fish-bearing streams across Oregon, Washington, and northern California. The function will last from June 2024 to December 2025. The incumbent will coordinate, train, and supervise small field crews (consisting of 2-3 people) in conducting backpack electrofishing and environmental DNA surveys, habitat characterizations, high-accuracy GPS navigation, and real-time digital data entry. Additionally, they will assist with data curation and management, maintain an online support system (UPRfish), apply for permits, and communicate with landowners and other collaborators.

Key Responsibilities 30% Project Management
Coordinating field resources, applying for public permits, requesting landowner access, scheduling fieldwork, reserving vehicles and lodging, planning routes, communicating with landowners, and field equipment inventorying. Report directly to project PIs about project progress and arising issues.

40% Fieldwork
Lead the field activities of a regional fish presence survey using backpack electrofishing and environmental DNA monitoring in Oregon, Washington, and northern California streams. Assist in the recruitment, training, and supervision of small field crews (2-3 people), including student adjuncts. Drive OSU Motor pool and/or USDA Forest Service vehicles to transport crews and equipment all over the study region.

30% Online System and Data Management
Assist in maintaining an online system developed to support collaborative data collection for the project. Organize and manage incoming data from various crews, including species, environmental, and app functionality information. Report to PIs any technical issues and assist in the debugging of web apps (Survey123, FieldMaps, ArcGIS practice Builder) to facilitate the continued functionality of the online system.

Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of practice related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and practice.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule The employee will work in a shared office in the Forestry Sciences Laboratory. Most of the year the work schedule will be regular (Mon-Fri, 9AM to 5PM) except during fieldwork season (Spring), when the position occasionally requires a working schedule of 8 days on/6 days off. When travelling farther than 2 hours from Corvallis (e.g., southern Oregon, Olympic Peninsula, northern California), crews will stay at field stations or campgrounds for up to 6 nights; the capability to travel outside of Corvallis for up to 6 days is required. These positions require walking through challenging terrain (e.g., steep, slippery, vegetated) to access and survey target streams. On some occasions, the incumbent will be required to carry up to 25 lbs of equipment.
