The office is dedicated to sustaining excellence in graduate education and to strengthening the vital link between research and the educational process. The BSOM Research and Graduate Studies Office has oversight for research activities in the Brody School of Medicine, and coordinates activities with other divisions of the university as they relate to research and graduate studies in a collaborative fashion. The Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies, in collaboration with the adjunct Dean of Graduate Studies, has oversight of the graduate program in the School of Medicine and the its 6 PhD programs and one Master's in Biomedical Sciences program. The office supervises research-related policy development and implementation, assurance of academic integrity in research endeavors and compliance with federal, state and local regulations on research, monitors external funding awarded for research and School of Medicine dollars spent to support research, has oversight of core facilities and shared resources, promotes interdisciplinary research between basic and clinical departments, and fosters an increase in external funding of research programs, improvement in research infrastructure, and provides the administration and management of grants/contracts for the Brody School of Medicine. The primary responsibilities for graduate studies are to develop, facilitate, and supervise programs to sustain excellence in graduate education. Information technology manages the doctoral (PhD) programs in the School of Medicine by facilitating recruiting efforts, guiding routine activities such as enrollment and admission, registration each semester, encouraging application for pre-doctoral fellowships, administering graduate fellowships, and ensuring student application for North Carolina residency. The strategic plan for research at the Brody School of Medicine is to create a culture of inquiry and scholarship that fosters research excellence through mentorship and support of scientists, both physician and basic, and to expand interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research efforts through improved collaboration, communication, and effective resource utilization. Job tasks The primary functions and responsibilities of this position are the BSOM graduate programs. Due to recent BSOM-RGS organizational changes, this position now has increased authority to carry out many of the day-to-day transactional work and functions of the BSOM graduate programs and to interact with the Graduate School on behalf of BSOM graduate students. Thus, the individual in this position requires high independence and must develop institutional expertise. The position will also be responsible for some components of RGS research operations, including BSOM core facilities, shared resources programs, and general office tasks. This individual will provide backup support to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the Brody School of Medicine when needed. Therefore, the employee may handle confidential information and perform general office tasks, including answering the telephone, mail, filing, purchasing, travel arrangements, travel reimbursements, ProCard reconciliations, leave records, student payroll, data entry, maintaining and updating the website, annual fixed assets inventory report, and various other tasks as assigned. This individual will also be a liaison between the public and visitors to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies. Examples of specific Job responsibilities: » Familiar with all of the graduate school policies regarding admissions, financial aid, adjunctship expenditures, graduation requirements, and Federal FERPA requirements. » Interacts with administration, faculty, staff, and students, and must represent the BSOM Research and Graduate Studies office with accuracy and efficiency. » Communicates the specific needs of Graduate Studies to other departments and concentration directors. » Responsible for maintaining a database of MS students, executing ePAFs for all MS students, entering MS classes for the coming semester, executing of MS student funding, and dealing with individual student registration problems. S/he also serves as a backup in these areas for the PhD programs. » Participates in the recruitment efforts of RGS by responding to inquiries or, when appropriate, referring them to the adjunct Dean. » Monitors the annual recruitment efforts of the MS program concentrations and maintains recruitment records. » At the request of the adjunct Dean for Graduate Studies, the employee prepares and submits reports and surveys on all aspects of graduate education to be used by the BSOM-ADR, the Dean of the Brody School of Medicine, the Dean of the Graduate School, the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, ECU Provost and Board of Trustees, the Office of the UNC President and Board of Governors, and some non-university agencies. » Other special projects and tasks that are related to the prosperous operation and missions of the ADR's Office. » Minimum Education/practice High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to execute the work.
