Primary Purpose of Department We invite applications for an adjunct or Associate Professor of Science Education in the Department of Middle, Secondary & K-12 Education (MDSK) in the Cato College of Education. This full-time, 9-month, tenure-eligible position will begin August 2025, and the prosperous candidate will be expected to teach students in undergraduate and graduate programs. We seek faculty colleagues to join a high achieving and dynamic department committed to preparing professionals who are expertiseable, effective, reflective, responsive, and collaborative.

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the expertise base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new expertise and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing expertise, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential tasks and Responsibilities Job responsibilities: The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise of current issues in science education and science teacher preparation. Faculty in this department have the opportunity to inform curriculum, guide students' intellectual growth, engage in innovative research, and foster active learning environments. The selected applicant will: maintain scholarly productivity in research, publications, and presentations; obtain external funds to support research activities; teach courses related to science education; prepare pre-service teachers for prosperous results with teacher licensure requirements; serve on doctoral dissertation committees; provide service to the field and profession; and participate in program, department, college, and university governance. We encourage candidates with a desire for interdisciplinary collaboration in innovative science education or STEM education research.

Minimum practice/Education UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, expertise and practice Required Appropriate qualifications:
   » An earned Ph.D. in science education, STEM education, curriculum and instruction, or closely related field from an accredited university.
   » At least three years of classroom teaching practice in science education.
   » A strong commitment to teach, advise, and mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
   » Evidence of efficacy in post-secondary teaching (face-to-face and online).
   » Deep expertise of current issues in science education and science teacher preparation demonstrated through teaching, research, and service records.
   » Evidence of sustained research productivity through a consistent record of significant peer-reviewed publications focused on science education.
   » The capability to work collegially with others, including faculty, staff, and students.
   » A strong commitment to the mission of the university, college, and department.

Preferred Appropriate qualifications:

   » Grant-writing practice.
   » practice establishing community partnerships.
   » Demonstrated work with schools.
   » practice in collaborative partnerships across STEM-related disciplines within or beyond a college of education context.
   » A current NC teaching license or eligibility to obtain one.
   » practice working with adolescents in middle grades or secondary contexts.
