Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in chemistry or related field with at least 18 graduate hours in chemistry. Eligible candidates for the position must be available to teach on HCC's main campus.

 

Preferred Qualifications

A Master's degree in chemistry. Teaching practice at the post-secondary level and/or working practice as a chemist in business or industry. Familiarity with Moodle or other learning management systems. practice working with a diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, capability, and ethnic background of students.

 

Position Description

The instructor will teach face-to-face and online General Chemistry I (CHM 151) and General Chemistry II (CHM 152) classes. Ideal candidates will be available to teach face-to-face sections on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the fall 2024 semester. tasks are primarily instructional, with efforts that promote and enhance the college's commitment to excellence in instruction and support the current needs of the students and other faculty. Faculty members are responsible to the Dean or Program Manager. The relationship of the instructor to the student is one of leader, teacher, advisor, and facilitator of learning.
*Faculty teach program courses during Fall and Spring academic semesters. Anticipated start date is August 12, 2024.*

ESSENTIAL tasks
The instructor will be responsible for the following tasks:
   » Prepare course materials; use appropriate teaching techniques including delivering lectures, leading discussions and conducting laboratory demonstrations; and perform other activities, which are related to and meet the requirements of the courses.
   » Generates updated course syllabi at the beginning of the semester that provide students with a list of course requirements, necessary texts/supplies, a summary of course content and subject competencies to be covered, and evaluation methods to be utilized.
   » Uses appropriate teaching techniques, including delivering lectures, leading discussions, and conducting laboratory demonstrations/exercises.
   » Maintaining office hours;
   » Assisting with student advisement and registration;
   » Serving on College committees;
   » Developing curriculum;
   » Maintaining professional competence;
   » Participation in professional development activities.
Additional Responsibilities
   » Manage and maintain all aspects of HCC's chemistry lab.
   » Conduct evaluations of student performance and assign grades on the basis of such evaluations.
   » Maintain records of student attendance and grades according to college and state policy and procedure.
   » Responsible for the development and revision of course content, textbook/equipment selection, instructional materials and teaching assignments/scheduling.
   » Responsible for administering student surveys in classes as prescribed by College procedure and discussing results with Dean or Program Manager.
   » Maintain professional skills and subject skills through continual study and research in discipline and through involvement in professional organizations.
   » Support and encourage college-sponsored activities.
   » Create a student-centered environment
   » Implement innovative strategies to meet the needs of students and improve processes
   » Interact with co-workers and perform tasks with the highest level of integrity
   » Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, and our learning community
   » Donate academic skills in the local, state or national community when appropriate to fulfill the community relations goals of the College.
   » Promote and support HCC's mission, vision, and values and promote and support coworkers in the most positive manner.
   » Perform other tasks and responsibilities as required.
