General Description: The Student Services Specialist - Athletics serves as a critical member of the Department of College Life in the effort to provide comprehensive support services for all student-athletes engaged in the athletic programs at UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ. The Student Services Specialist - Athletics reports to the Director of Athletics and is responsible for resolving registration issues related to advising, testing and any other registration related issues and offers unique advising capabilities to students seeking career advice or guidance for transfer or dual/joint admission programs. The Position also works closely and collaboratively with significant departments and constituent groups campus-wide, including the Academic Learning Center, faculty, discapability support services, testing services, Academic Advisory Committee, American Honors and UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ Coaches to enhance the academic success of student-athletes.
The Student Services Specialist - Athletics will work to create and implement a student-athlete personal development program which helps student-athletes' command ownership of their academic success, career development, leadership abilities development, and community service and volunteerism. The Student Services Specialist - Athletics will lead an array of programming including but not limited to covering respect for diversity and inclusion among student-athletes; nurture an environment that encourages student-athletes to effectively access and utilize campus support services; and promote students' development of strong character, integrity and leadership abilities expertise for a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes.

Characteristics, tasks, and Job responsibilities: · Provides intrusive academic advising with focus on educational planning and timely program completion.
· Engages student in career assessment analysis to provide guidance to student on interests and expertise.
· Provides career advising including values clarification and other strategies which support personal, academic, and vocational development/growth.
· Facilitates Student-Athlete New Student Orientation.
· Consults with the appropriate department wot resolve problems or policy concerns evolving from within the sections of the program or unit supervised.
· Assists with developing student learning/development results measures for Advising and Student Development goals and objectives; collects appropriate data; and completes assessments of results assigned; recommends modifications to existing services located on results.
· Invites presenters to discuss student-athlete emotional well-being, leadership abilities, personal growth and decision-making expertise, career and life goals, and service to his or her campus and surrounding communities.
· Develops and implements student development workshops for student-athletes new student orientation, career and employment topics and personal development.
· Prepares reports and studies containing findings and recommendations for the review, information, and assistance of the student development division.
· Responsible for retention efforts with first-time, full-time cohorts.
· Serves on ad hoc committees as required.
· Provides data on area usage and materials needed for the unit budget.
· Meets with student-athletes on a regular basis to monitor academic progress, class attendance, grades, course selection. Provides support services including study expertise, time management, organizational expertise, transcript evaluation, facilitation of graduation and transfer to a four-year university, when applicable.
· Reviews reports from faculty and staff on students' academic progress, class attendance and grades. Keeps accurate records, develop statistical analysis of academic success or challenge, and provide data as requested.
· Respond in a timely manner to student, faculty, and coach inquiries. Regularly communicates with student-athletes regarding events and deadlines all over the academic year and disseminate information to student-athletes. Maintain regular communication with coaches and Athletic Director.
· Assists students with Web services, College Portal, and College E-mail instruction, tuition/fee payment instruction, and information on internal and external scholarship opportunities.
· Assists students in co-curricular student development by providing information regarding Student Government Opportunities, volunteer opportunities, internship opportunities, College Club membership and opportunities, College Life sponsored events such as Student Theater and the student art gallery, and deadline dates for various opportunities.
· Promotes a positive image of the College and contributes to the recruiting effort directed towards student-athletes and their parents, providing information about the College and answering questions posed by student-athletes or referring them to an appropriate authority or resource for the requested information.
· Maintains records/data regarding services as directed
· Performs related responsibilities as assigned by manager or designee.

Education Requirements: Master's Degree required

practice: Two (2) years' practice in college counselling and academic advising or equivalent preferred.

Competencies and expertise Required: · Possess a comprehensive knowledge of the curriculum, academic rules and regulations and the unique needs of student-athletes including NJCAA eligibility.
· Interpersonal, organization and communication expertise required.
· practice with student information systems in a student development/student affairs capacity.
· Proficiency with MS office products including Excel and Access.
· Analytical and problem-solving expertise.
· Excellent customer service, oral and written communication expertise, including capability to communicate effectively with a diverse external community and a diverse campus community.
· Valid driver's license and access to an automobile.
· Must possess strong interpersonal expertise to interact tactfully and courteously with students, the general public, faculty, and other staff members.
· Must be a ?quick study? to grasp knowledge of policies and procedures relating to every aspect of student services and athletics that a prospective or current student may utilize.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

· This position's tasks are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, located on the activity scheduled.
· Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
· No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
· Some travel required.

Terms of Employment: Full-time. Flexible schedule to meet department needs. Some evening, weekends, and extended hours will be required. capability and availability to travel on short notice to all on and off- campus sites as needed by the college. Flexible hours are required all over the year, especially at peak times. Position may be required to work at any campus at any time. Employee must establish primary residency in New Jersey within one year of appointment unless an exemption applies.
