Primary Purpose of Department The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office promotes environmental, health, and safety compliance within the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus community. The University is committed to the protection of the environment and safety on the job is everyone's responsibility. The EHS office provides guidance at all levels of the University to ensure compliance, maintain a safe workplace and to protect the environment.

Primary Purpose of Position The primary purpose of this position is to administer and monitor the University's Fire and Life Safety program to maintain compliance and ensure campus community safety.

Summary of Position Responsibilities The Fire Safety Specialist will work in both office and field settings, attending meetings, conducting inspections, training sessions and responding to fire safety service requests. The position may require occasional evening or weekend work. The essential tasks are listed below:
   » Assist with administering the Building Evacuation Plans, Emergency Preparedness, Fire Safety, Aerial Lift, Forklift, Hot Work, and Event Safety programs.
   » Respond to any area of the campus to assess and investigate hazardous conditions or other safety and health concerns. Write reports detailing all findings, deficiencies and recommended corrective action.
   » Conduct evacuation fire drills for campus buildings.
   » Conduct inspections of facilities and employee work practices to identify any potential hazards needing correction, including automated external defibrillators (AEDs), building egress paths, emergency signage, fire protection systems and unique hazards in various work environments.
   » Communicate inspection findings, assist departments with corrective actions and monitor until corrective actions are taken.
   » Deliver training programs and informational sessions to emphasize fire safety and avoidance.
   » Ensure fire safety regulatory compliance in all campus buildings and grounds.
Minimum Education/practice Bachelor's degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and practice.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Education, expertise, expertise and practice
   » Degree in safety and health, engineering, risk management, other related technical field.
   » Possess or is actively working towards Professional Certification(s) (GSP, ASP, OHST, CHST, CSP, ARM, CIH, CHMM, etc.).
   » 1-3 years of safety practice.
