Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill two full-time, 9-month, Medical adjunct positions for the Student Health Services at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Student Health Services (SHS) mission is to provide leadership abilities for the health of the University community. This position contributes to the mission of SHS through teamwork and collaboration, participates in organizational committees, provides University outreach, and contributes to the academic success of OSU students.

The purpose of the Medical adjunct position is to provide support to clinicians and nursing staff in patient care at Student Health Services. Takes vital signs, medical history as indicated. Prepares patients for appointments and assists clinician as needed. Keeps exam rooms and treatment areas stocked with appropriate supplies.

Provides prompt and efficient disposition of patients accessing Student Health Services for medical care. May perform telephone prioritization and evaluation of a patient's medical symptoms to ensure patient receives appropriate appointment type and medical access. Schedules, reschedules and cancels appointments, verifies demographic information, takes messages and provides information to/from patients, SHS staff and community agencies.

Key Responsibilities 90% CLINICAL
   » Providing patient support, and patient care via a telehealth platform as an extension of the physician practice. Serves as a liaison and coordinates information between providers, other clinical staff, and patients.
   » Maintains the highest degree of confidentiality in patient care.
   » Maintains, at all times, a proper professional relationship with patients.
   » Facilitates collection and documentation of all necessary information required for patient visits. Assures necessary patient care information is processed and forwarded in a timely manner.
   » Takes temperature, blood pressure, pulse, visual acuity, height, weight, oxygen saturation and peak expiratory flow
   » Readings for patients in preparation for exam, as needed or at the direction of the nursing or clinician staff, and documents in the electronic medical record.
   » Helps to make clinician aware of patient chief complaints when several patients are waiting.
   » May reorder patients who are waiting to assist clinician for smoother patient flow.
   » Helps to make clinician aware of patient chief complaints when several patients are waiting.
   » Observe and prioritize waiting patients for signs and symptoms that need immediate attention such as bleeding, weakness, compromised mobility, fainting.
   » Manages and monitors patient flow all over the clinic.
   » May refer patient to medical staff for immediate examination or treatment.
   » May perform injections under supervision of provider.
   » May assist clinician during procedure preparing room, positioning patient, draping patient, providing requested equipment to clinician, and/or providing emotional support to patient when appropriate.
   » After procedure, cleans and prepares room for next patient, including washing and sterilizing instruments or preparing for
   » sterilization.
   » Cleans and prepares observation room for patient care as needed.
   » Performs electrocardiogram when ordered by clinician.
   » Performs nebulizers and other treatments when ordered by clinician.
   » Takes inventory of supplies, equipment and instruments; requisitions supplies through unit manager.
   » Participates in restocking and maintaining cleanliness of work areas.
   » Answers phones and responds to non-medical questions.
   » Runs errands such as delivering specimens to labs, sending faxes, etc.
   » Assists in patient transport when necessary on arrival and departure.
   » Demonstrates expertise of OSHA regulations, soaks, washes and cleans medical instruments used in clinician offices according to protocol.
   » Participates in and supports continuing quality improvement activities.
   » Attends department meetings and remains current on clinic/department policies and procedures.
   » Checks electronic medical record each a.m. for clinician and nursing schedules, available appointment times, etc.
   » Checks nursing schedule.
   » Makes follow-up phone calls.
   » Assists the nurses as needed.
   » Escorts or transports patient, as needed, to appropriate treatment area.
   » Periodically assumes additional responsibilities and performs other tasks as may be delegated by Clinical Services Director, MA Manager, and/or Clinicians.
   » Attends department meetings and remains current on clinic/department policies and procedures.
   » Participates on committees.
   » Cross-trains in each area so that he/she can function independently in each area.
   » Participates in orientation of new employees as necessary.

What We Require
Six months practice providing health care support in a health care facility; OR Completion of a vocational training program in a health care support area (e.g., Medical Office adjunct, Certified Nursing adjunct). NOTE: Preference will be given to those candidates who possess a expertise of medical terminology.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq.
