Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Trades/Maintenance Worker 2: Venue Technician position for the College of Liberal Arts, Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts , at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Venue Technician prepares, installs, rigs, troubleshoots, operates, and maintains projection and AV equipment, scenic elements, display cabinets, and maintains artworks and similar objects in the context of a busy visual and performing arts center. The Venue Technician is expected to work across all six venues at PRAx (the Kate and John Stirek Gallery, Detrick Concert Hall, Ray Theater, Toomey Lobby, Dixie's Garden, and Austin|Parrish Arts Plaza). The Venue Technician is the primary individual responsible for packaging and shipping at PRAx, including coordinating delivery and pick-up of everything from production equipment, general office supplies, and artworks. The Venue Technician works under the general supervision of the Senior Venue Technical Manager, but their work is directed by the Chief Curator during installations and deinstallations of visual artworks in the gallery or elsewhere. Primarily their work is directed by the Senior Venue Technical Manager. In all cases, the purpose of the position is to use materials-related expertise to enact the artistic, creative, and curatorial visions of curators, visual and performing artists, rental users, and event managers. The Venue Technician completes certain cleaning tasks (dusting artworks, cleaning performance surfaces, and the like) that are outside the scope of general building custodians. The Venue Technician is responsible for everyday walkthroughs of the full building, including lock/unlock tasks as assigned, and is expected to directly manage, or create plans for managing, things found out of place, unexpected damage, unsightly scuffs or abrasions, and the like. Patching and paintings of gallery walls (or other walls used for installation) as well as the performance surface in Ray Theatre is expected to be performed with the highest attention to detail. The Venue Technician may participate as a member of the running crew for performances and events. The Venue Technician may be assigned to collaborate with the School of Visual, Performing, and Design Arts as needed.

Key Responsibilities 25% Packing, Shipping & Transport
   » Serve as the lead packer, shipping, and delivery manager for PRAx, packing, unpacking, assembling or disassembling technical production equipment, as specified by the manufacturer or on-site managers, as well as artworks with the highest level of care.
   » Working in collaboration with the Associate Director of Business Operations to arrange shipping logistics and insurance, which correspond directly with senders and recipients.
   » Perform condition reports as necessary for all incoming and outgoing items.
   » Prepare shipped or otherwise acquired artworks for installation.
   » Transport artworks as needed to and from shipping/receiving facilities, from galleries or lenders, and to offsite locations where work may be installed as directed, which requires driving a university owned vehicle and the maintaining of a driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
   » Provide excellent and empathetic customer service for both internal and external customers by engaging in culturally appropriate and inclusive communication.

25% Production and Event Preparation
   » Prepare venues as necessary, including rigging, painting, and scenic installation.
   » Hang and focus lights, projectors, or other equipment for concerts, events, art installations, immersive practices, and theatrical production.
   » Manage theatrical performance surfaces as directed, including laying dance floors and repainting.
   » Procure and transport materials and equipment as needed for events.
   » Run cables, set up and test AV and performance gear.

20% Art Installation
   » Install artworks in any medium (visual, projection, 2D, 3D) as directed by curatorial staff.
   » Move, place, and modify moveable gallery walls as directed.
   » Install interpretive information, wall text, vinyls, and similar.

15% Cleaning, Maintenance, and Building Services
   » Perform everyday building and gallery walkthroughs, correcting issues as discovered and when able (including floor scuffs, nonfunctional equipment, damage), reporting issues when they cannot be handled independently.
   » Lock/unlock spaces as needed and determined by the overall building schedule and the coordination of the everyday walkthrough with building operations.
   » Patch and repair gallery walls or other affected surfaces and systems to the highest standard.
   » Run cables, power, lights, and technical gallery equipment as directed.
   » Build plinths, cases, and other display infrastructure as needed.

10% Running Crew
   » Participate as needed as a member of the running crew for performances or events, tasks to be assigned by the Senior Venue Technical Manager in keeping with the skill set of the position holder

5% Other tasks as Assigned

What We Require
Three years of general building maintenance practice in one or more of the following trade areas: carpentry, electrical, mechanical, painting, plumbing, and welding. NOTE: Some positions may require licensure or certification in a specific trade area.

   » practice with carpentry and fabrication; capability to build/fabricate scenic elements, display cases, and similar infrastructure for the visual and performing arts

   » Basic MS Office abilities
   » Demonstrated capability to provide excellent customer service to a diverse and broad group of internal customers with varying backgrounds, needs, and identities.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You to Have
   » Bachelor's degree or higher degree in theatre productions or related field in the visual and performing arts.
   » 5 years practice handling, installing, and shipping/packing objects in a gallery or museum context.
   » 5 years practice in technical venue operations with a demonstrable history of accomplishing installations of artworks alongside technical productions elements.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
   » Position requires working on lifts, catwalks, a tension grid, and other environments
   » Overhead work is required
   » Position holder will be on their feet for most of the working shift.
   » Schedules vary according to the rhythms of a busy visual and performing arts space.
   » Evening and weekend work is to be expected as needed to accomplish installations outside of times when PRAx is open to the public, and to participate as needed in evening and weekend productions.
   » A variety of hand and power tools are required.
