POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Communications develops and implements a communications strategy for the organization that builds and maintains a positive brand and actively contributes to growing Fleisher's audiences. The Director of Communications also leads internal communications providing all Fleisher ambassadors (staff, teaching artists, students, board) with appropriate materials to inform the public about Fleisher programs, activities, and goals. This is a highly collaborative function, supporting work done by several programming teams as well as the Development department.
The Director of Communications serves on the leadership abilities team and is an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Fleisher, particularly with an eye toward how Communications strategies can and should align with Fleisher's core values and DEAIB initiatives. The Director of Communications supervises Fleisher's full-time Media and Communications Manager to create a comprehensive strategy for Fleisher's digital footprint, including paid advertising and earned media management when appropriate, augmented by print collateral, wayfinding signage, exhibition interpretation and documentation of Fleisher's continuing mission work. This position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Development, Education, and Community Engagement departments. KEY RESPONSIBILITIESCommunications and Marketing
   » Creates and implements communications plan with goals, messages, tactics and measurements. Should be able to look ahead and plan out advertising and communications strategies that leverage Fleisher's resources over a 6 to 12 month period.
   » With the Manager of Media and Communications and other department heads, produces a communications calendar that prioritizes clear messaging and establishes marketing and member engagement initiatives for the year. Fresh ideas about how to develop and grow Fleisher's audience are most welcome.
   » Identifies and writes compelling stories about Fleisher's programs for external audiences, supporting them with video and photographic documentation when appropriate.
   » Manages Fleisher's graphic design needs, largely produced in-house using Adobe software. Core projects include campus wayfinding, a quarterly brochure, member newsletter, program specific communications, and postcards for major milestones all over the year.
   » Acts as Fleisher spokesperson for the press when the Executive Director is not available and responds to members of the media in a timely manner; composes and distributes press releases as needed. Develops and maintains positive professional relationships with various members of the media.
   » supervises the maintenance of consistent brand identity for Fleisher, including defined standards, guidelines and messaging (logos, colors, fonts, tag lines, etc.).
   » supervises the organization's online presence and voice, including oversight of all social content and Fleisher's website.
   » Researches, writes, and designs a wide variety of promotional materials across departments, often working closely with Programs and Development staff. Types of projects include, but are not limited to, brochures, invitations, e-newsletters, flyers, ad copy, and website materials.
   » Supports Fleisher's exhibition program from the application stage to the production of in-house graphics and signage.
   » Keeps informed of new developments in arts marketing to ensure that all marketing plans utilize the most cost-effective marketing tools with the highest ratio of return.
   » Conducts periodic reviews and tracks marketing goals to evaluate the effectiveness of current efforts and justifies future expenditures; actively understands the challenges of reaching multiple audiences with a diverse set of needs and expectations.
Strategic leadership abilities
   » Supports and improves the engagement of board members in promoting Fleisher's programs and its strategic vision. When appropriate, acts as a leadership abilities point person for any Board committees focused on Communications or Audience Development.
   » Writes and implements Fleisher's strategic communications plan.
   » Thoughtfully and empathetically reviews how Fleisher communicates with a diverse set of audiences and makes sure that all stakeholders are considered in communications access strategies (i.e. language translation, subtitles, digital vs analog interactions)
   » Demonstrates calm, emotionally intelligent decision-making in completing own tasks and managing staff, including actively seeking opportunities for direct reports to professionally develop
Administration
   » Encourages an overall spirit of teamwork and collaboration within Fleisher, setting an example for the staff at all times and serving as a model of professionalism for the entire organization.
   » Creates and manages departmental budget and supervises fiscal spending of department within the financial parameters advised by Executive Director and Business Manager.
   » Leads internal communication efforts to ensure that staff are abreast of all current goals, programs, and activities.
   » Acts as the point of contact for any Communications-related vendor contracts, which may include SEO contracts, website management and design, mailhouse and collateral production companies and distribution vendors.
REQUIRED/PREFERRED RELATED practice:
   » A minimum of five to seven years of practice in marketing and/or communications in organizations of similar size, scope, and/or complexity.
   » Excellent graphic design and technical expertise for producing print and digital collateral; proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite programs strongly preferred.
   » Demonstrated success in supporting Development campaigns and/or developing Communications strategies around non-profit Strategic Plans.
   » Strong commitment and belief in Fleisher's mission, vision, and values.
   » Interest or practice in community-located art or education a plus, but not required.
   » expertise of project planning tools, marketing databases, email marketing tools.
   » Proficiency with Microsoft Office, project planning tools, marketing databases, email marketing tools.
   » Strategic, high-level thinking. capability to align vision with strategic communications, internally and externally.
   » A collaborative leadership abilities style that encourages staff to bring ideas to the table while giving support and freedom for staff to problem-solve and to make decisions. Comfort with being a sounding board to mentor staff in both day-to-day logistics and broader policy/program decisions.
   » An effective and compelling communicator, comfortable in representing the organization publicly, with a keen capability to articulate the mission and vision of Fleisher.
   » capability to offer sound media relations advice to senior leadership abilities.
   » capability to work occasional weekends or evenings for events required.

Candidates will receive questions prior to their first round of interviews to align on expected practice. Interviews will last approximately one hour, with time in each round for questions from the candidates. The projected start date for this position is late Summer/early Fall.
