Job Summary The Office for Research Advancement (ORA), in the Division of Research and Innovation, invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Research Impacts Specialist: Advancing Research Impact in Society (ARIS) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

The Office for Research Advancement (ORA) in the Division of Research and Innovation seeks an Institutional Innovation Facilitator to develop and facilitate the Broader Impacts Institutional Innovation (BI3) Program that is part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) supported center for Advancing Research Impacts in Society (ARIS) . ARIS - led by the University of Missouri in partnership with Oregon State University, Rutgers University, University of Minnesota and Spellman College - has a mission to advance impacts of research for the betterment of society and the expansion of research. The BI3 program will be administered by Oregon State University and facilitated in collaboration with all lead institutions and additional external partners such as the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) and the American Association of Universities (AAU). The goal of BI3 is to cultivate an inter/national leadership abilities collective to guide research institutions and national organizations to employ societally responsive frameworks for a thriving research enterprise by collaborating with national and international partners and thought leaders to expand leadership abilities and national discourse on research impacts.

This 1.0 FTE position has responsibility 1) convene and coordinate national discussions and conversations that advance institutional and organizational capacity to generate and assess research impacts and 2) synthesize, author and coordinator collaborative and actionable scholarship to support institutions to use evidence-located and innovative practices and policies to enhance research impacts.

This position reports to the OSU Principal Investigator for ARIS and Co-Lead for BI3 ( Dr. Julie Risien ), will receive additional direction and mentorship from the BI3 Co-Lead ( Dr. Laurie VanEgeren ) and maintains collaborative working relationships with the entire ARIS leadership abilities team, staff, external partners, NSF and the ARIS community.

Key Responsibilities BI3 is designed as an iterative program where the results of initial work will guide subsequent work, this design is responsive to a dynamic landscape and insights from engaged experts. The below tasks are anticipated but subject to modification as the BI3 program develops.

30% Designing, coordinating, and facilitating meetings, workshops and national convenings
   » Coordinate recruitment of broader impact leaders and champions to participate in virtual planning meetings and an in-person workshops to collaboratively identify systemic barriers to increasing societal impact across institution types
   » Collaboratively detailed, and outcome oriented meeting agendas and connected activities.
   » Facilitate groups of executive and academic leaders to collaboratively develop sets of feasible solutions to advance impacts at institutional and national scales considering identified systemic barriers.
   » Facilitate a BI3 Fellows program and serve as editor for popular media pieces highlighting the results of BI3 activities.

30% Literature review and synthesis
   » Review and summarize significant literature about systems level efforts to advance research impacts.
   » Generate and publish landscape analyses of work to advance research impacts at the institutional and national scales.
   » Lead development of broadly disseminated white papers that will inform future activities of BI3.
   » Coordinate generation and publication of empirically grounded guidance for institutions and organizations to apply in developing societally responsive strategic impact plans.
   » Coordinate a broad assessment of current and future competencies for leading and sustaining high-impact institutions.
   » Conduct an analysis of existing leadership abilities development programs to identify which competencies are present or lacking in professional preparation programs for higher education leaders.

30% Research and scholarship
   » Lead research projects (including designing and validating instruments, data collection and analysis, and write up of results and recommendations) to support the BI3 program as Information technology develops.
   » Develop significant and actionable frameworks to guide institutional change that advances research impacts.
   » Ensure skills from Emerging Research Institutions and Minority Serving Institutions are represented in all research activities.
   » Design and conduct structured ?job audits'' (combined observational and interview-located methods to identify work practices from the perspective of leaders and other key actors within the institution) with recognized impact leaders.
   » Establish inclusive and strategic policies and practices for shared authorship of all BI3 generated scholarship.

10% ARIS Integration
   » Participate in ARIS staff and leadership abilities meetings as assigned.
   » Contribute to the development of online training modules and materials to support competency development for new and aspiring research enterprise leaders and broader impacts professionals.
   » Review portfolios submitted by broader impacts professionals seeking ARIS certifications.
   » Represent ARIS and present BI3 or related work at significant professional meetings and conferences
   » Support other program areas in ARIS by reviewing documents, testing tools, providing thought partnerships and/or serving on committees or work groups as assigned.
   » Maintain an continuing commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the research and innovation enterprise.
What You Will Need
   » PhD. with a focus on higher education, public policy, public administration, sociology, organizational studies, or engaged scholarship or similar field; OR a PhD. in any discipline with at least 5 years of practice working at the institutional/systems level scale to advance research impacts and/or research translation; OR a master's degree in any discipline with at least 10 years of practice working at the institutional scale to advance research impacts and/or research translation.
   » Demonstrable scholarly and practical knowledge of key concepts and practices at the interface of science and society such as broader impacts, research translation, public engagement with science, participatory and engaged research and workforce development
   » Evidence of contributions to advancing diversity, access, inclusion and belonging in the research and innovation enterprise.
   » Scholarly evidence demonstrating advanced knowledge of social science research methods such as participatory or action research, interview and survey-located research, focus groups and observational protocols, general qualitative and quantitative social science skills.
   » Comfort using both peer-reviewed literature and policy documents in scholarly endeavors.
   » Excellent verbal and written communications and coordination skills.
   » Strong research design, data collection, data organization, analysis and interpretation skills.
   » capability to write well-constructed scholarly articles for a broad audience of academics, administrators, and policy makers.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule This position is eligible for fully remote work with the option to work fully or partially in-person on the Corvallis campus within the Division for Research and Innovation. Hours are flexible, but core working hours must accommodate collaboration across US time zones. This is primarily a desk job. Domestic travel is anticipated 4-6 times per year. Occasional international travel (annually or less than) may be required.
