Position Summary:: The 3-year term Project Metadata Librarian I/II reports to the Director of Resource Management and Description and contributes to metadata management and maintenance for specific strategic projects for Falvey collections. For assigned projects, provides effective leadership abilities and implements efficient workflows in description management including metadata creation and maintenance, bibliographic authority control, and the evaluation and implementation of metadata applications and tools. Responsible for managing resource description projects in preparation for a new library building, which may include deselection projects, creation of new collections, bibliographic data enhancement projects, data conversion projects, etc. Collaborates with other Metadata Librarians in Resource Management & Description to ensure consistent policies and procedures of metadata creation for both MARC and non-MARC.

tasks and Job responsibilities::
   » Manages complex projects pertaining to cataloging and resource description using a wide variety of metadata standards (including MARC, AACR2, RDA, Dublin Core, MODS, METS and RDF/BIBFRAME). Creates, edits, and maintains bibliographic data for specific library collections. Responsible for creating and maintaining data in central resource sharing databases such as OCLC WorldCat.
   » Responsible for the quality control of metadata in specific library collections, catalogs, and repositories. Ensures descriptions meet accepted metadata standards (MARC, RDA, AACR2, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, RDF, etc.). Implements authority control for selected collections. Ensures proper synchronization between local and national catalogs.
   » Leads and contributes to programs, goals and strategic initiatives of the Resource Management and Description, Falvey Library, Villanova University, and professional organizations, as appropriate. Performs additional tasks and assists with special projects as assigned.
Minimum Appropriate qualifications::
   » MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution required.
   » 1+ years practice of progressively responsible metadata management in libraries.
   » capability to work independently with minimal supervision
   » Capacity for higher-level strategic analysis of technology trends.
   » Collaborative approach to problem solving and working across organizational boundaries in service of user needs.
   » Demonstrated capability to set priorities, exercise flexibility in meeting objectives, effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adjust as circumstances change.
   » Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for developing and maintaining relationships with diverse user communities.

   » Advanced expertise of various descriptive, encoding metadata standards including AACR2, RDA, DC, RDF, BIBFRAME, etc.
   » Broad expertise of metadata applications and tools among different disciplines and different metadata communities.
   » Advanced expertise of current trends and issues in resource description management.
   » Demonstrated capability and independent exploration of appropriate technologies affecting description management and academic libraries.

   » Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance
Proven record of continuing professional development
   » Proficiency with MS Office products
   » capability to work with a wide and changing metadata applications and tools (e.g., integrated library system products, MARC Edit, authority databases, institutional repository software, metadata editing tools)
Preferred Appropriate qualifications::
   » 3+ years of progressively responsible metadata management practice in academic libraries.
   » Working expertise of one or more non-English languages.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours: :
   » Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking for up to 4 hours at a time, frequent bending and lifting, able to lift up to 15 lbs. of library materials while moving/walking, pushing, and pulling a book truck (4 wheels) of library materials weighing between 50 and 100 lbs., capability to climb several flights of stairs on an occasional basis.
   » The Project Metadata Librarian may be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays to meet service needs for department.
