Position: Part-Time Animal Enrichment Coordinator

Schedule: 20 hours/week, M-F with occasional night and weekends

Pay Rate: $16.05/hour

Overview: Piedmont Wildlife Center is a Durham-located non-profit organization inspiring people to develop a lifelong connection with nature and encourage conservation through a community-oriented approach to nature education, leadership abilities development, and environmental science. We offer year-round outdoor education programs as well as conservation-themed outreach and citizen science programs with our resident Ambassador Animals.

Land Acexpertisement: Our camp operates out of Leigh Farm Park in Durham County. Leigh Farm Park is a remnant of a 19th century plantation. The Durham County Park department has preserved multiple historic structures. Information technology is extremely important that we discuss this history with our staff and campers, honor the indigenous and enslaved peoples who cared for the land, amplify their stories, and continue learning about and examining the parks’ legacy. Position Summary: The part-time Animal Enrichment Coordinator will primarily focus on the enrichment and training of our Ambassador Animals as well as assisting both the Director of Conservation and the Research and Husbandry Coordinator by teaching environmental programming, providing care for our ambassador animals and assisting with the Box Turtle Connection project.

tasks & Job responsibilities:
? Assist in training Conservation interns (Fall, Spring and Summer)
  ? Train interns on animal/raptor care and how to track box turtles using radio
   telemetry
? Train new volunteers on all aspects of animal care and raptor care
? Lead the raptor handling team and commit to weekly raptor training class
? Develop and maintain training and enrichment programs for non-releasable raptors
  ? Train raptors to be comfortable doing programs and being handled for routine
  medical examination
  ? Manage enrichment volunteers and monitor progress
? Assist in the Box Turtle Connection project and our citizen science project, Turtle
Trekkers
  ? Organize and analyze box turtle data
  ? Use radio telemetry to track box turtles in park
  ? Take photographs and morphometric data on box turtles found within the park.
   Add to a statewide database.
? Assist with any additional husbandry/enrichment of ambassador animals, including but not limited to: weekly wellness checks, animal training, maintenance and upkeep of all enclosures (indoor and outdoor), and purchasing supplies.
? Assist in teaching school programs, field trip and birthday parties when needed
  ? Teach nature-located programs using live animals (reptiles, mammals and raptors)
  ? Teach a wide variety of ages (pre-k to high school) and group sizes (up to 100+)
  ? Teach in-person and virtual programming including tours
? Assist in general office tasks and other organizational tasks as needed

Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS :
? Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences, environmental studies, wildlife conservation or equivalent practice.
? Previous animal training practice or demonstrated expertise
? Previous animal restraint or medical practice
? Passion and demonstrated expertise of NC native flora and fauna and their habitats
? capability to dissect rats, mice and chicks for raptor food
? Comfortable using power tools, climbing ladders, and performing strenuous manual labor in all weather conditions
? Excellent written and verbal communication expertise and attention to detail
? Excellent organization and computer expertise (Microsoft Suite, G Suite, Canva)
? Must have or be able to obtain a valid driver's license with no record of major or repeated minor traffic violations
? Must be able to stand for long periods during programs or outreach events, hike in a variety of terrain through the woods, and be able to lift tables and chairs up to 50 pounds
? Confident and enthusiastic
? Dependable. Must have reliable transportation
? Comfortable working independently and within a team environment
