Job Summary The Hatfield Marine Science Center is seeking a Resident Director. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.


The HMSC Resident Director is responsible for the comprehensive oversight and onsite management of HMSC's Housing Department and connected student support services at Hatfield Marine Science Center. The position is an on-call, live-in professional that serves as HMSC's primary housing authority. The professional ensures a safe, inclusive campus environment that promotes a sense of belonging for all residents and students. The HMSC Resident Director is responsible for the management of all HMSC Housing logistics including reservations, assignments, billing, safety, and policy compliance, serving a broad population of students, visiting scholars, researchers, faculty, and campus visitors to accommodate housing arrangements.

As an essential member of the HMSC Student and Campus Services Team, the HMSC Resident Director will join a collaborative team that ensures the unique programmatic needs of HMSC are met. This position reports to the HMSC Manager of Students and Campus Services and requires exceptional skill in database management, organizational systems, processes, and customer relations.

Hatfield's annual economic impact to the coast is $52 million, $25 million representing ?core' operations funding, and $27 million in competitive grants, and, through this research enterprise, Information technology provides undergraduate and graduate students with hands-on research opportunities and experiential instruction. HMSC also supports K-12 STEM education programs (~35K students per year) and public outreach through programming in our Visitor Center (~ 150,000 visitors per year). About Hatfield Housing:

The HMSC Resident Director will have the exciting opportunity to witness and participate in the development of HMSC's new student housing complex, currently in construction and projected for completion Fall of 2025. HMSC currently offers unique on-site housing accommodations for up to 100 college students, instructors, and researchers. The HMSC housing development is currently underway as part of the forthcoming campus expansion and will include 77 apartment style units. The Resident Director will play a vital function in the operational vision, logistics and implementation of residential services and student support systems. The position will have a wide variety of tasks that will evolve all over the process of the HMSC housing project.

Key Responsibilities Housing Assignment, Administration & Communications 50%:
   » Maintain and update Housing Policy Guide and Housing Agreements in coordination with manager, HMSC leadership abilities, and the Office of General Counsel.
   » Act as HMSC Housing authority. Facilitate tours, maintain communications, and answer questions for prospective students and HMSC residents.
   » Review and process all incoming housing applications for students, visiting scholars, researchers, faculty, and other potential HMSC residents and visiting groups, as appropriate.
   » Schedule and assign housing assignments. Correspond with incoming and current residents, students, and faculty regarding occupancy status.
   » Manage and coordinate move-in and move-out process for all HMSC residents, including room turnovers, issuing/returning of keys/key cards, housing orientation for new residents, and ensuring all necessary documentation is received in a timely manner.
   » Maintain accurate student housing files and records through all database systems, including accurate emergency contact information for all residents. Responsible for alerting residents should an emergency occur.
   » Manage HMSC Housing communications. Disseminate information, often of a complex nature, to students, prospective students, outside agencies, visitors, parents, etc. that may require explanation of established University departmental policies and procedures and direct individuals to sources of additional information.
   » Monitor, reconcile and update charges for housing cancellations and assignment billings. Coordinate with business office to process housing payments/billing.
   » Hire, supervise, train and coordinate work of seasonal Resident Advisor/s (RA) and other housing staff as assigned.
   » Adhere to and maintain housing budget.
   » Compile student information through surveys, direct student contact, and extraction of data from various HMSC and OSU data sources to identify trends, challenges and opportunities for growth.
   » Maintain HMSC student participant data.
   » Prepare and present information related to HMSC Housing and the HMSC Residential practice for prospective students, HMSC and university leadership abilities, invested stakeholders, etc.
   » Foster an inclusive environment for all residents, students, and visitors.

Community Development & Residential Activities 25%
   » Develop and lead programming/events that foster community and a healthy living environment, celebrate diverse identities, support student development and personal growth, and enhance the HMSC residential practice..
   » Develop and supervise HMSC student living learning community in collaboration with HMSC academic partners, and HMSC leadership abilities.
   » Respond to and develop programming and services to meet identified and emerging needs of the HMSC residential community.
   » Assist in coordination and driving of motorpool needs for student academic and social activities.
   » Educate residents of living/working within Tsunami Inundation Zone. Coordinate and lead Tsunami and fire drills.
   » Coordinate and support planned trainings for students.
   » Work closely with HMSC Academic Programs and OSU Student Life colleagues to support HMSC Students.
   » Maintain consciousness of OSU and HMSC procedures related to academic programs and student life cycle to ensure programmatic alignment and consistent, positive student practices.
   » Help ensure the safety of all students and residents through compliance with OSU/HMSC policy and state and federal regulations, including FERPA and the Clery Act.

Housing Facilities Management 10%
   » Live-In, onsite Housing authority. Afterhours on-call primary Housing contact for lock-outs, emergencies and critical situations.
   » Perform routine maintenance inspections of assigned facilities, arrange for work orders, and ensure the health and safety of residents and guests.
   » Coordinate with facilities and maintenance department for custodial needs and repairs.
   » Track and maintain an inventory of housing supplies and furnishings. Purchase necessary housing equipment as assigned.
   » Manage Housing mailroom and residential mail services.

Community Standards, Care & Crisis Support 10%
   » Educate the residential community about community standards and expectations, HMSC Policies, university policies and regulations through community meetings, one on one conversations and residential programming opportunities.
   » Identify potential violations of codes, policies, and regulations
   » Document potential policy and conduct violations, and incidents of bias and discrimination. Route incidents through appropriate channels.
   » Maintain and develop policies and procedures for conduct, care and crisis situations. Maintain expertise of campus and community resources to refer residents to.
   » Check-in on students in or that have practiced crisis, provide resources, and refer to other offices to provide continued support to the students
   » Administer student conduct meetings and apply appropriate, educational sanctions when students are found in violation of institutional policies and rules
   » Provide assistance, support and mediation for residential conflicts.
   » Maintain a comprehensive expertise of academic, medical, social, and mental health resources available to all HMSC students through the University and local community. Collaborate with OSU units responsible for these resources.
   » Perform work of a confidential nature. Handle confidential information regarding ADA, behavioral/discipline issues, and other sensitive information for current, incoming, and former OSU students.
   » Embrace and continuing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion within everyday work.

Other tasks as Assigned 5%
   » Assist members of the HMSC Directors office as needed.
   » Serve as a HMSC liaison to significant OSU internal and external organizations.
   » Support HMSC programming, services, and events as needed. Other tasks as assigned.

   » Master's degree in College Student Services Admin, Educational leadership abilities, Counseling, or closely related field OR, bachelor's degree with at least 2 years of practice in Education, Housing, Lodging Accommodations, or Residential Life.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule This is a live-in position. The Resident Director performs essential functions and may be required to report to work during emergencies, university closures and holidays. This a full-time position that requires some weekend, evening, and early morning time commitments, on-call responsibilities, as well as managery work. The Resident Director will receive a one-bedroom apartment, utilities included, at the convenience of the employer.

Necessary capability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Necessary capability to traverse 1 mile over uneven, coastal terrain.

The position is located at the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon, which is in a tsunami hazard zone. HMSC's evacuation plan and other tsunami safety-related information may be reviewed at hmsc.oregonstate.edu/tsunami-preparedness and oregontsunami.org.
