The Center for Quantitative Life Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research adjunct - Bioinformatics Analyst position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.


The Center for Quantitative Life Sciences (CQLS) at Oregon State University collaborates with and assists life scientists of all levels in their research using cutting-edge genomics, data science, and computational techniques. The purpose of this position is to provide bioinformatics and data analytics research consulting services, and to assist and develop collaborative research and educational opportunities. The CQLS is an enthusiastic team of data, computer, and laboratory scientists serving OSU and beyond.

The CQLS interacts with a wide variety of faculty, staff, and students representing a broad range of skills and cultural backgrounds. This position will support CQLS's and the university's mission of equity, inclusion and diversity by respecting, welcoming and supporting the diverse perspectives of our clientele. Key Responsibilities 50% Bioinformatics and Data Science consulting and analysis.
Carry out analysis of large-scale data sets from the life, health, earth, engineering, and computer science domains, including genomics and transcriptomics research, and environmental data analysis as a service for clients of the Center for Quantitative Life Sciences (CQLS) at Oregon State University. Includes meeting with clients to plan research projects, assisting researchers with one-on-one training, interpreting data, conducting data research, and preparing publications.

42% Bioinformatics and Data Science research.
Participate in funded research projects requiring skills in data science, bioinformatics, and computational biology. May involve development of new tools and algorithms, preparation of grant proposals, writing of papers, and attendance at conferences. May serve as instructor for short workshops or classes in topics in in data science, bioinformatics, computational biology, and programming.

8% Administration tasks
Participate in CQLS staff meetings, equity & inclusion training and outreach. Follow guidelines aligning with the CQLS Strategic Plan.

What You Will Need
   » M.S. or higher degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, biology, or related field (at time of hire).
   » Demonstratable proficiency in one or more programming languages (Python, R, C++, Java, or similar).
   » Demonstratable proficiency in command-line linux, HPC cluster computing, queuing systems, and installing bioinformatics programs and packages. practice researching, identifying, and testing novel bioinformatics programs.
   » Published research in bioinformatics or data science in a scientific domain (life, health, earth, engineering, computer science, or similar).
   » Demonstrated problem-solving skills, independence, high motivation, and excellent communication skills, both orally and written.
   » Strong organizational and time management skills.
   » Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
What We Would Like You to Have
   » Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, biology, or related field.
   » practice in bioinformatics analysis such as genome/transcriptome sequence analysis, RNAseq, genome-wide association studies, environmental sequencing.
   » practice in statistical analysis of scientific datasets.
   » practice working with Illumina, PacBio, and HiC sequencing data for RNAseq, genome assembly, phased genome assembly.
   » practice in bioinformatics protocol and pipeline development.
   » Teaching or teaching adjunct practice in academic or other settings.
   » practice as an industry or academic consultant in bioinformatics or data science or other service-related practice.
   » practice in outreach and engagement with underserved communities.
