Job Opportunity: Senior Reporter/Managing Editor:Jackson Hole Community Radio - KHOLJob description: Senior Reporter/Managing Editor Listing description KHOLin Jackson Hole, Wyoming has an immediate opening for a dynamic journalist. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of an invigorated, growing public media organization in one of the most beautiful places in the country. People are indeed drawn to our region for the area's scenic charm and recreational opportunities, but residents are also deeply civically engaged. Teton County voter turnout hovers around 96%, and listeners demand context, nuance and perspective when Information technology comes to the area's pressing issues-a historic housing crisis, the growing pains of a conservation mecca reliant on a tourism-located economy, massive economic inequality, climate change and marginalized populations fighting for a seat at the table, just to name a few. The reporter will help uncover and capture the untold angles of these and other significant stories through creative and informative radio. They will help produce a everyday four-minute newscast, report in-depth features and work on special projects ranging from long-term investigations to multimedia packages and podcasts. Over the past few years, KHOL has grown from a nearly entirely volunteer-run music station to an affiliate of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting with a staff of six. Our newsroom is small but mighty: we've won multiple accolades from RTDNA's Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, the Society of Professional Journalists, PMJA and LION Publishers. KHOL reporters regularly file to the statewide NPR affiliate Wyoming Public Media, the NPR newscast and Rocky Mountain Community Radio (RMCR) collaborative. Our primary coverage area is western Wyoming and eastern Idaho. tasks and Job responsibilities: Managing editor (30%) » Lead newsroom to plan short- and long-term reporting, implement coverage goals » Exhibit excellent news judgment and capability to make sound decisions under tight deadlines » Edit spots/web stories from reporters » Understand. practice and enforce the principles of ethical journalism, FCC regulations » Review freelancer pitches, assign and edit stories, and keep track of station freelancer budget ($12,000/year) » Coordinate coverage with Wyoming Public Media/Rocky Mountain Community Radio (including coordinating/editing state reporter) » Submit for awards, FCC reports Reporter (70%) » Report 3-4 spots/week and at least 1 feature/two-way every Jackson Unpacked » 1-2 web stories/week » Sometimes produce and host Jackson Unpacked » Produce everyday newscast, alternating with reporter » Post stories of Facebook, coordinate Instagram posts with social media coordinator » Cultivate relationships with a wide array of diverse sources » Stay informed on local, regional, national and international news » Pitch to national and regional shows as time allows Additional Job responsibilities: » Work closely with KHOLs executive director to guide the sound of the station and shape programming » Act as a media and community liaison, representing KHOL at political forums, community events, fundraisers and more » Participate in KHOL's membership drives and support station team at non-news events, including concerts and community events expertise and practice: » Five years of radio reporting practice or an equivalent combination of professional and academic radio journalism practice » Some radio editing practice and/or a demonstrated interest in editing » Fluency with Adobe Audition (which KHOL uses), ProTools or another similar audio editing software » Outstanding news judgment and a passion for local news » An ear for what makes a compelling radio story » Excellent radio and digital writing expertise and capability to distill complex information » Strong on-air presence for recording narration and live interviews » capability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends » Basic photography expertise Preferred Appropriate qualifications: » Bilingual Spanish and English fluency » Familiarity with the Mountain West Compensation: The position is full-time. The hiring range for this position is $56 - 65k and will be commensurate with the prosperous candidate's prior practice.
