The Department of Fisheries, Wildlife & Conservation Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

The Research Associate (RA) will be a part of the Oregon Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences at OSU in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey and Nisqually Indian Tribe. The RA will use data from the Nisqually River Delta in southern Puget Sound, Washington, USA to model the Nisqually fall Chinook salmon population under varying hatchery, harvest, and habitat conditions.

College of Agricultural Sciences faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality academic, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning opportunities. Positions with primary responsibility for Extension and outreach are likewise committed to learner success through programming appropriate for diverse audience.

FWCS is an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Department is composed of approximately 300 staff, including academic faculty, research adjuncts, classified staff, graduate students, and temporary staff. Over $8 million of externally funded grants and contracts are received each year in support of science focused on basic ecological research, conservation, and sustainable use of fish and wildlife and their habitats. The Department is the largest in the College of Agricultural Sciences, with over 1000 students in 8 degree and certificate programs, including one Bachelor of Science degree, five graduate degrees, and two graduate certificates. Key Responsibilities 50% Use an integrated population model to estimate Chinook salmon population parameters under different management and climate change scenarios. Perform field research and collection at field site as needed.

25% Derive spatially explicit carrying capacity estimates to inform wild Chinook salmon recovery goals and hatchery management strategies.

25% Develop and publish resource guide and decision support tool for restoration practitioners in Puget Sound.

What You Will Need PhD in in fisheries, wildlife biology, quantitative ecology, or a related field.

candidates must demonstrate a commitment to working professionally and inclusively with people from diverse backgrounds, especially Tribal nations.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You to Have A strong quantitative background, preferably with practice applying integrated population models, age structured population models, stock-recruitment functions, state-space models, spatially explicit models, and using Bayesian methods

A demonstrated record of sharing their research in peer-reviewed outlets

Excellent communication expertise and the capability to effectively work with agency collaborators and stakeholders

A background in fisheries ecology and management with a particular focus on hatchery production, commercial harvest practices, and/or coastal habitat restoration

An interest in Tribal fisheries management

practice facilitating workshops to gauge stakeholder needs and values

Working Conditions / Work Schedule The position will take place in an office environment at the OSU Corvallis campus with the option for a hybrid or remote work schedule. Periodic travel to visit the field site and meet with collaborators in Olympia, Washington will be required.
