First, the education of medical students, with an emphasis on the training of rural primary care physicians. Secondly, is training of residents in primary care and specialty areas. Finally, training graduate students and post-doctoral fellows for careers in medical research. The Department of Physiology is one of six basic science departments at the Brody School of Medicine. Physiology includes 22 faculty members, 13 staff members including technicians and administrative personnel, 2 post-doctoral fellows, and 8 graduate students. The department supports the three missions of the School of Medicine. In addition to medical students, the Physiology Department also provides formal classroom instruction to students in nursing, nurse anesthetist, and physician adjunct programs. Coursework is offered all over the year. Graduate students in doctoral and master's degree programs also receive one-on-one, laboratory-located instruction. The Physiology Department maintains a vigorous research program spanning the slope of physiological disciplines. Research is a major activity of the Department of Physiology, and represents greater than 50% of total faculty effort. Physiology is a central biomedical discipline, important to many medically-related fields. As such, the Department is currently working with several other departments in joint degree programs, including the Bioenergetics Program, in conjunction with the Department of Exercise and Sports Sciences, and the Human Performance Labs. Department faculty actively collaborate with faculty in other departments all over the School of Medicine, as well as with several other universities in the United States. The Department of Physiology is located on the sixth floor of the Brody School of Medicine. Information technology consists of 60,000 sq. feet of laboratory and office space. The Department also occupies space in the Warren Life Sciences Building. The department currently has a budget in excess of 1.7 million in state funds and over 1.2 million in grant funds annually, with several additional grants currently submitted for funding. Job tasks The Department of Physiology in the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University seeks a highly motivated and qualified research laboratory technician to assist with experiments designed to investigate the biochemical, molecular, cellular, and functional effects of myocardial infarction. The incumbent will possess the capability to manage projects, plan and execute experiments alone or in conjunction with others, and modify/develop procedures as needed. tasks include but are not limited to data collection, documentation, and analysis as well as laboratory and equipment maintenance, safety, and resource management. The incumbent will need to demonstrate and model effective communication, mental concentration, self-motivation, and problem-solving expertise. Scope of work also includes the training and supervision of other staff and students in performing specific techniques/experiments and availability to meet occasional, brief on-call tasks (weekend cell culture maintenance) as needed. Interest in and/or aptitude for contributing to research of pertinent project specific information, drawing inferences from results obtained, and participation in scientific writing is desirable. »(40%) Conducting Experiments/Procedures - Identifies problems, troubleshoots, and analyzes variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols; modifies, refines, or adapts techniques and procedures; modifies and/or adjusts quality control measures. Coordinates multiple, concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project. »(20%) Data Analysis - Collects and analyzes data for accuracy, validity, and integrity. Monitors documentation of results; reviews and recognizes documentation which may lead to modification and adaptation of research methodologies; may collaborate with others. Adapts and/or modifies experimental methods located upon interpretation of data. Contributes to the preparation of publications and/or reports; makes presentations within the department and/or at professional conferences. »(20%)Communication and Instruction - Train others in the performance of complex tests and procedures and the proper use and care of specialized equipment. Documents experimental processes and results in reports and/or publications. »(10%) Project Planning and Experimental Design - Searches literature demonstrating an knowledge of scientific experimental and/or research theory to assist in the design of methods, procedures, and/or techniques. Identifies data to be collected and documented. Identifies resources needed to conduct experiments. »(10%) Laboratory Management - Plans and monitors resources needed to operate the laboratory; maintains inventory control; coordinates space, field, equipment, and/or facilities; may monitor expenditures. Evaluates and modifies quality assurance procedures. Minimum Education/practice Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and practice.
