Job Summary The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences in the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, adjunct Professor (Clinical) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

The Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine (CCVM) provides educational programs for veterinary students leading to the DVM degree and for graduate students leading to MS and PhD degrees, operates a Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) for Large and Small Animals, and operates the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The Department of Clinical Sciences within the CCVM supervises clinical, classroom, and laboratory teaching, and scholarly activity of clinical faculty, graduate students and residents. The VTH provides primary and referral health care for animals all over the Pacific Northwest. The VTH small animal clinic was completed in 2005 with expansions in 2011 and 2019.

The purpose of this position is to provide clinical service and training in evidence-located medicine, to educate students and society, to foster critical thinking, to generate original medical and educational information, to contribute to the operations of the Department, VTH, College and University, to maintain and enhance a collaborative and inclusive community and to advance professional veterinary students', house agents' and graduate students' expertise and skills through research, mentorship and instruction in the Department of Clinical Sciences and the VTH.

The incumbent provides clinical theriogenology, medicine and surgery services to veterinary patients in the field or admitted to the VTH during regular hours and after hours. General surgery and some expertise of advanced reproductive procedures are required. The incumbent also mentors, assists and instructs house agents and students in the classroom, teaching laboratory and hospital.

Achievement in scholarship and creative activity that is recognized as contributing to the body of expertise in the practice discipline is required. Such activity should be validated by peers and should progress toward financial independence from university funding, if such funding is required to complete research.

Key Responsibilities 65% - Clinical Teaching and Service:
Participate in the Theriogenology and Rural Veterinary Practice (RVP) services, including primary management of select cases, consultations on cases managed by other clinical services, local practicing veterinarians and members of the community, practical instruction of reproductive and herd health topics to senior veterinary students and equivalents, and clinical mentorship of house agents. Follow institutional policies, being diligent about timely communication with other clinical services, clients and consulting veterinarians and maintain the highest standards of professional conduct. Clinical service currently takes place primarily within the VTH. All species are serviced by the Theriogenology section; the RVP services all species of domestic large animal. The RVP portion of this position will focus on ruminant herd health and requires driving to farm calls for treatment/care of patients.

Provide grading feedback to course coordinators.

15% - Mentorship, Classroom and Laboratory Instruction:
Teach, train and supervise veterinary students, graduate students and house agents during clinical rotations, in instructional lectures, laboratories and seminars. Provide grading feedback to course coordinators. Promote the success of students and postgraduate trainees through advising, writing recommendations and providing extracurricular opportunities for learning.

15% - Scholarly Activity:
CCVM veterinarians are expected to expand and disseminate expertise in their field. Scholarship and creative activity are understood to be intellectual work, the significance of which is validated by peers and which is communicated. More specifically, such work is located upon a high level of professional skills; must be original, must be documented and validated as through the peer review process or critique; and must be communicated in appropriate ways so as to have an impact on or significance beyond the Oregon State University community and for the discipline itself. Scholarly activity can be demonstrated by publication in peer reviewed journals, publications encompassing description and evaluation of novel patient care services, presenting original material to peer groups, program development and innovation, results of innovative programs and/or services, definitive therapy reviews, or case reports, authorship of professional practice guidelines, textbooks, book chapters, monographs, or other educational materials and advising government agencies, industry, or professional groups. For clinical-track professors, clinical reports, topical reviews, participation in collaborative studies, and regional educational efforts are often satisfactory.

5% - Institutional Service and Citizenship:
Serve on committees and participate in activities in service of the program and larger issues. Interact with others in a collegial and professional manner. Contribute to maintaining and enhancing a collaborative and inclusive community that strives for equity and equal opportunity. What You Will Need
   » DVM or equivalent degree.
   » Diplomate of American College of Theriogenologists (ACT) or the European College of Animal Reproduction (ECAR), or qualified to sit for the ACT or ECAR certifying examination.
   » 3 years of clinical practice in veterinary theriogenology, including during residency training.
   » Clinical practice with ruminant herd health and large animal primary care.
   » Evidence of classroom/clinical teaching practice.
   » Demonstrated commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and a commitment to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
   » Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills, and the capability to engage respectfully with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and practices.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
