Primary Purpose of Department The University Communications department is responsible for developing and executing communication strategies, messaging, and engagement efforts that are aligned with the University's mission and vision. Within the division, departments such as reputation management, internal and external communications, academic and research communications, strategic content or editorial services, marketing, and visual media communications, work together to ensure effective communication and engagement with internal and external audiences through traditional and emerging communication channels.

Primary Purpose of Position The director of communications orchestrates the communication strategy for the college. The function involves crafting and executing a strategic communications plan to present the college as a key player in producing experts in literacy and science education, counseling, public policy, and educational leadership abilities.

Summary of Position Responsibilities High-level responsibilities include:
   » Establishing an overarching communication plan and developing annual consciousness and engagement strategies to reinforce the plan and promote college priorities.
   » Researching and developing multi-channel content that publicizes and promotes the college's programs.
   » Creating and executing a strategy to support college rankings and awards.
   » Creating briefs, fact sheets, pitches, and press releases to raise the college's profile, including conducting any necessary research or interviews with college leadership abilities, faculty, staff, students and alumni to produce these items.
   » Following and assessing college academic trends and generating creative opportunities to leverage these trends for media coverage.
   » Collaborating with colleagues in University Communications and college marketing and leadership abilities to execute communications strategies to support fundraising goals.
   » Developing and updating college branding materials.
   » Developing web content and maintaining high-level, high-visibility pages on the college website.
   » The director partners closely with the college's external relations team, and reports to the sr. director of academic and research communications in the function of an academic communicator, with a strong dotted-line reporting relationship to the dean of the Cato College of Education.
Minimum Education/practice
   » Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment and 3-5 years of significant practice; or an equivalent combination of education and practice.
Preferred Education, expertise, expertise and practice
   » practice writing for a content marketing agency, research or academic institution, freelance writing for clients or writing for a literary magazine or journal.
