Job Summary The Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology invites applications for a full-time 1.00 FTE, 12-month, fixed term Research Associate: Water Quality Toxicology Lab Manager position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

Environmental and Molecular Toxicology is a department within the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS). The department's primary function is research, with extension activities and student instruction. EMT has 16 professorial faculty and a support staff of over 50 academic and classified employees. EMT's mission is to undertake basic and applied research in the biological and chemical sciences, particularly as they relate to problems of agricultural importance. Activities of the department are supported by funds from the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), grants, contracts, the Extension Service, and the instructional budget of the CAS Department members are engaged in research on the analysis of pesticide and other chemical residues; biochemical toxicology and drug metabolism; lipid, nutritional, membrane and trace element biochemistry; pesticide and xenobiotic chemistry; plant biochemistry and the molecular biology of plant development; and mechanisms of DNA repair and recombination. Three extension specialists deal with field problems and education in toxicology and environmental chemistry. http://emt.oregonstate.edu/

This position will lead and support environmental research and service designated to deal with environmental chemistry and toxicology issues, especially for environmental contaminants utilizing various extractions techniques, chromatography, and mass spectrometry. This position will also develop new ideas and methods in research, including effect-directed analysis for the detection and identification of emerging water contaminants.

tasks will include performing and assisting in the performance of field work and laboratory analysis, preparing samples for analysis, maintaining instruments, analytical result and quality control documentation, general group and laboratory operation tasks, training and supervising students and other workers, as well as co-author publications, manuscripts and may present at regional and national associations.

What You Will Need PhD degree in Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Toxicology or related field.

broad practice in the performance of laboratory environmental quantitative and qualitative analysis and sample preparation, LIMS (laboratory information management systems) and practice in chromatography, mass spectrometry, and quality assurance.

Previous practice in mass spectrometry and performing targeted and non-targeted analyses.

practice analyzing environmental contaminants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, or other emergent chemical classes of concern (PFAS, PAHs, etc).

capability to design, establish and manage all aspects of scientifically and statistically sound laboratory and field experiments.

Must demonstrate the capability to work independently and to make effective and prompt decisions.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. What We Would Like You to Have expertise and practice in advanced statistical analysis, including regression and analysis of variance.

Use of R and other statistical analysis workflows (JMP, SPSS, etc).

Demonstrated practice leading work of and mentoring student employees from a variety of backgrounds and lived practices.

Publication record (demonstrated practice with the peer-review process and with the preparation and submission of scientific manuscripts for publication).

Interest in Toxicology testing in the 21st Century (Tox21 approaches), including high-throughput effect-directed analysis and computational toxicology

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Position is located in the OSU Corvallis campus, at the Garcia-Jaramillo (Water Quality Toxicology) Laboratory.

Standard working hours 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday - Friday. Occasionally, this individual may participate in field studies and sampling campaigns from water bodies (i.e., rivers, irrigation canals, lakes) under potentially difficult terrain and in inclement weather, and some limited duration travel may be required. The capability to lift, carry, push and pull objects up to 25 pounds is required.
