Job Summary Oregon Sea Grant invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term adjunct Professor of Practice: Extension Specialist in Coastal Mariculture position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director. This is a full-time position with a 2-year appointment. Extension or renewal beyond two years is contingent on funding and the discretion of the director.

The adjunct Professor (Practice) with Oregon Sea Grant ( https://seagrant.oregonstate.edu ) and the OSU Extension Service ( https://extension.oregonstate.edu ) will focus on coastal mariculture in Oregon. This position reports to the Oregon Sea Grant Associate Director of Extension and Engagement and will contribute to the missions of Oregon Sea Grant, OSU Extension Service, and Oregon State University. Oregon Sea Grant Extension has a record of excellence in facilitating co-production of knowledge and solutions together with researchers and coastal communities and organizations. This is a full-time, 2-year fixed term appointment supported by external grants that include specific goals, initiatives, and anticipated results. The position may be renewed or extended contingent on the availcapability of funding and the discretion of the Oregon Sea Grant director.

Oregon Sea Grant, located at OSU since 1971, is one of 34 Sea Grant College Programs established by Congress as a partnership between universities and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Through an integrated program of research, extension and education, our mission is to spark discovery, knowledge, and collaboration to foster healthy, inclusive, and resilient coastal communities and ecosystems (seagrant.oregonstate.edu). Oregon Sea Grant funds research projects, manages fellowships and internships, and implements extension and education programs to address issues of importance to coastal communities and ecosystems. The program also operates the Hatfield Visitor Center, a public marine science museum/aquarium, and K-12 educational programs at the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, OR.

The coastal mariculture extension position will support the goals and objectives of Oregon Sea Grant state-wide with a focus on supporting the newly formed Oregon Coastal Mariculture Collaborative and its partners. Founding partners of the Collaborative include the Oregon Aquaculture Association, Oregon Sea Grant, The Nature Conservancy, Ecotrust, and the Oregon Kelp Alliance. Goals for the Collaborative include improved knowledge of 1) community needs and goals for engaging in coastal mariculture, 2) appropriate locations for coastal mariculture endeavors, 3) appropriate species for cultivation, especially native shellfish and seaweeds, 4) market opportunities for these species, and 5) opportunities to inform and improve permitting and management process.

This position also engages state-wide with local communities, organizations, and practitioners to enhance knowledge of how socio-economic, cultural, environmental, and historical factors influence perceptions, preferences, and knowledge of issues related to coastal mariculture. Such issues might include coastal resilience, climate mitigation, cultural resources, marine spatial planning, workforce development, conservation, restoration, ecosystem-located management, blue economy, economic and environmental sustaincapability, environmental literacy, social license, first foods, traditional, local, and Indigenous knowledge, marine technology and innovation, or others identified in or aligned with the Oregon Sea Grant Strategic Plan (2024-2027) [ https://seagrant.oregonstate.edu/about/strategic-plan ] or significant to Tribal Nations, tribal communities, or other coastal zone communities.

In addition to being part of the Oregon Sea Grant program, the person in this function will benefit from being part of the national Sea Grant network and the OSU Extension Service. They will also work closely with aquaculture researchers and programs state-wide and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (including USDA Agricultural Resources Service), Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station, and the Port Orford Field Station. Active and effective communication with employees (faculty, staff, students) and interested parties is critical to the success of this position. This position will involve travel to and from meetings all over the state with occasional out-of-state travel for projects and training.
