Organizational Unit Overview The Student Health Service is a department within the Division of Student Affairs and is charged with the responsibility of providing primary health care for the student body of East Carolina University. The primary care encompasses delivery of acute medical care, preventative medical care, health education, and mental health care; provision of laboratory and pharmaceutical services, administrative support services, medical records, radiology, and the education of ECU School of Medicine residents are included in our array of services. The Student Health Service department also provides advisory and educational assistance to other university departments, i.e. Sports Medicine, Intramural Recreational Services, Health Education, and other departments. The Student Health Service is mandated by the University and the State of North Carolina to deliver ?State of the Art? medical care, economically to all fee-paying students through a predetermined budget. The diverse medical needs of the ECU student body require that the Student Health Service be a multi-functional and constantly changed department.

Job tasks This class performs basic patient care tasks, supportive counseling and a variety of treatments. Direct patient care tasks include physical and personal care, medication, and immunization administration, all of which is performed that under the close supervision of a Professional Nurse or Physician. Employees may also be responsible for cleaning and maintaining the patient care environment, performing routine clerical functions, and transporting patients within the facility. Employees may obtain and record pertinent health information, maintain patient data and reports, and provide information to individuals and families. ECU Student Health Service is seeking a Certified Medical adjunct to assist in the outpatient management of adult patients. This position requires an energetic and enthusiastic individual to assist with the outpatient health care management of both well and sick adults. Candidates should demonstrate the capability to handle high patient volumes and maintain effective communication with colleagues, patients, and their families. The selected candidate will also serve as an educator for the patient population and their families regarding preventative health measures, disease, and disease management. Candidates should possess basic computer expertise needed for entering data into the electronic medical record. Accuracy and attention to detail are crucial. In addition, candidates should be able to work independently, prioritize and handle multiple tasks and complete tasks effectively and in a timely manner. Responsibilities of this position include nursing support, technical assistance, assisting physicians with some procedures, and the activities of maintaining a safe environment .

Patient Care expertise:
   » Obtains and documents correct measurements to include Ht, Wt, B/P, Respirations, and Oxygen saturation
   » Records Reason for Visit to include current medications and allergies
   » Reports abnormal findings to RN/Healthcare Provider
   » Documents all data appropriately in medical record
   » Medication Administration- as directed by Healthcare Provider if medication does not require individualized varying dosages and preparation or one that has significant potential side effects or adverse event
   » Review medication instructions/allergies with patient
   » Administer immunizations and/or other injections
   » Appropriately reports and documents any adverse reactions observed
   » Complies with policy for reporting any adverse reaction
   » Observes standard precautions and organizational policy

Clinical Procedures:
   » Venipuncture and Capillary for blood collection
   » Specimen collection
   » Point of Care Testing
   » Surgical skin preps
   » Dressing changes
   » Surgical wound care
   » Oxygen Therapy/monitor flow rate
   » Suctioning to include Oropharyngeal and Nasopharyngeal
   » 2-lead EKG acquisition
   » Observes and reports changes in wounds, drains, dressings, etc. to detect signs of infection.
   » Pulse Oximetry
   » Vision and Hearing Screenings
   » Assists RN/Healthcare Provider with proceduresMaintains safe and clean environment for patients:
   » Monitors and restocks patient care supplies
Follows correct procedures in emergency situations:
Emergency phone numbers
Code Blue procedures

Hazardous materials
Maintains and operates all designated patient care equipment
Maintenance of clean and safe clinical environment

Participates in patient/family teaching plan as directed by RN/Healthcare:

Reviews patient education and instructions as directed by Healthcare Provider

Minimum Education/practice Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to execute the work. Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, or certification through the American Association of Medical adjuncts (AAMA.)

License or Certification required by statute or regulation Depending on candidate qualifications, one of the following will be required:
(1) Contributing: Registered NAI through the NC Department of Health Human Services
(2) Journey: Registered NAII through the NC Board of Nursing
(3) Advanced: Certification through the American Association of Medical adjuncts (AAMA) is preferred OR Registered Medical adjunct (RMA) through the American Medical Technologists (AMT). If not already certified or registered, please note that certification or registration through the previous mentioned organizations, or a CCMA through the National Healthcareer Association, must be obtained 6 months from your start date for continued employment.

Preferred practice, expertise, Training/Education One year of professional medical adjunct care in an outpatient clinical setting is preferred

License or Certification required by the Department Depending on candidate qualifications, one of the following will be required:
