The Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center, Union Experiment Station invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research adjunct position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

Applications are invited for a full time Faculty Research adjunct positions at the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center, Union Experiment Station (Union, Oregon) of Oregon State University. We are pursuing a botanist/plant ecologist to support continuing research on forest and rangeland ecology and management. This position will support multiple projects including: 1) collaborative research with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) focused on mule deer forage availcapability and habitat quality, and 2) the ecology, management and restoration of First Foods, particularly Roots and Berries, in the interior Pacific Northwest in partnership with Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Nez Perce Tribe, land management agencies (e.g. Forest Service) and non-governmental organizations (e.g. Wallowa Resources). These positions play key functions in projects, including collecting a range of environmental, natural resource, and ecological attributes in the field, implementing field and lab experiments (e.g. seed germination studies), collaborating with ecologists, land managers and stewards, as well as assisting with data analysis and contributing to and authoring publications, reports, presentations and outreach materials. These positions work closely with project partners in all aspects of the work.

The Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center (EOARC) is composed of two separate and fully functional research stations - Burns and Union Stations. The Union Station is Oregon State University's first branch research station (established in 1901). Research and outreach activities are focused on rangeland ecology and management, wildlife management, ecological restoration, alternative livestock systems and sustainable resource management in the diverse landscapes of eastern Oregon. EOARC faculty and staff collaborate on research and outreach efforts with a wide variety of partners including agencies, tribes and non-governmental organizations.

Key Responsibilities 50% Field data collection. Implement standardized protocols and methodologies to characterize a range of ecological (e.g. composition, biomass, density, cover, richness, structure, etc.) and environmental attributes (e.g. slope, elevation, canopy cover, soil physical properties, etc.) in forest, riparian and rangeland ecosystems. Implements field and lab experiments (e.g. seed germination studies) following protocols. Provides leadership abilities, supervision and direction for student field crews. Train students in data collection techniques and plans work.

15% Data Entry and Management and Analysis. Download and/or enter data; perform QA/QC review; generate summary statistics, figures and summarize results.

15% Interpret results, write reports and publications connected with projects.

10% Project Support. Assist with project implementation including logistics, planning, coordination and communication among various partners.

10% assigned tasks as required.

What You Will Need Bachelor's degree in ecology, botany, plant ecology, natural resources, rangeland ecology, wildlife or related discipline.

practice measuring and collecting natural resource and/or ecological data (e.g. soil, slope, aspect, richness, diversity, composition, density, etc.) in field settings (forest, grassland, shrubland, wetlands, etc.).

practice using GPS units to navigate to locations and record spatial data in the field.

practice and/or training in use of dichotomous keys, plant identification and plant/vegetation measurements.

practice and commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.

Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal expertise.

Working expertise of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Docs.

capability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

capability to kneel/squat for extended periods of time for data and sample collection.

capability and availability to work in difficult terrain in adverse weather conditions (heat, snow, rain, etc.)

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Employee in this position may be required lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

During field data collection, alternative work schedules may be required (e.g. 4 10-hour days).

During the field season, camping in rural/remote locations (during the work week) may be required.

Fieldwork occurs in the interior Pacific Northwest; terrain is mountainous and varies flat to steep and irregular (mountainous).

Temperatures may fluctuate all over the season from cold (below freezing) to very hot in the summer.

Must work during inclement weather conditions.

Approximately 50% of the work in this position is performed outdoors; the remaining 50% is in the office (mostly in the winter months).
