Job Summary This is an Internal Employment Opportunity.

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Microbiologist 1 position for the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University (OSU). This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 1 year from the appointment begin date.

Responsibilities for this position include performance and interpretation of routine diagnostic tests for chronic wasting disease and the Molecular Diagnostics lab as well as providing additional support activities for the OVDL laboratory.

Key Responsibilities 55% Performs standardized procedures for serological identification of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervid samples from ODF&W. Prepares samples for ELISA. Performs standardized procedures for molecular identification of viruses, bacteria and parasites. This includes extraction of nucleic acids using traditional chemical techniques, columns or magnetic bead purification techniques. Amplifies nucleic acids using standard and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedures including traditional PCR and real-time PCR. Performs appropriate quality control procedures to ensure the validity of results. Independently interprets results of tests by correlating test results with QC data and expected control values, following guidelines specified in standard operating procedures.

15% Processes and labels samples. May determine acceptcapability of samples submitted for testing. May make decisions regarding prioritization of test schedule during a given shift. May include creating pools of multiple samples. Maintains stocks of positive and negative controls for routine test QC. Prepares all reagents used in everyday performance of tasks, which may include preparing dilutions. Prepares specimens and accompanying reports to be mailed to other agencies such as NVSL or FADDL in cases Information technology is warranted.

10% Enters and finalizes results into VDL LIMS computer system. Communicates appropriately with state veterinarian, NAHLN, NVSL, FADDL, ODF&W, and state epidemiologist in regard to reportable/actionable results. Clinically significant results are brought to the attention of the manager or the lead microbiologist.

10% Assists with training and day-to-day guidance and prioritization of workflow for student laboratory adjuncts. This individual functions as part of an integrated team, cross training on tasks is required. As with all members of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, this individual will be expected to behave in a professional and collegial manner that respects diversity.

5% With guidance from manager and/or Lead Technologist, assists with updating SOPs and other official documents.

5% Monitors equipment for proper functionality and maintains laboratory QC and QA records as necessary for the lab to maintain AAVLD accreditation and good laboratory practices. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions when necessary. Assists in maintaining laboratory in a clean organized condition.

What We Require
A Bachelor's degree with advanced courses in Bacteriology, Chemistry, and/or other biological fields which shows knowledge of microbiology theory, principles, and practices and laboratory procedures, equipment, and instruments; OR An equivalent combination of training and practice.
What You Will Need
   » An appropriate level of knowledge of microbiologic and molecular testing procedures, laboratory terminology, equipment, and materials.
   » A good working knowledge of standardized molecular testing methods using aseptic techniques.
   » Must be able to use micropipettors accurately, as well as specialty equipment designed for use in a serology lab, centrifuges, balances, and miscellaneous laboratory equipment.
   » Demonstrated capability to contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming workplace environment for individuals with a range of different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and/or life practices.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have Minimum of 6 months previous work practice at the time of hire performing nucleic acid extractions and various PCR amplification methods for identification of viruses, bacteria or parasites.

prosperous completion of AAVLD/ NAHLN PCR proficiency testing for key analytes (Influenza A Virus, African Swine Fever, Classical Swine Fever, Foot and Mouth Disease/Senecavirus A).

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Rabies vaccination will be required. Standard work schedule will be M-F, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Work may require occasional overtime hours on evenings and/or weekends. Employee will be exposed to animal and human pathogens. Employee may be exposed to noxious odors and hazardous chemicals. Work may require sitting for extended periods of time while working in a biological safety cabinet. Must have good manual dexterity and the capability to execute very detailed tasks.
