Organizational Unit Overview The School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU) is composed of 17 departments which function to: 1) provide health care for the citizens of eastern North Carolina; 2) educate primary care physicians to meet the health care needs of eastern North Carolina; and 3) make medical education available to minority and underprivileged people. The Department of Internal Medicine (herein referred to as Medicine), the university's largest department and, arguably, its most differentiated academic unit, is a primary contributor to the missions of medical education, patient care, research, and community service.

Playing an important function in the School of Medicine's academic group practice, the Department of Internal Medicine consists of a core administrative unit, five divisions and eleven subspecialties. Individuals serving in primary functions within the department are grouped in organizations termed divisions, and these divisions are administered as units by the Clinical Department Administrator and four vice chairmen. The primary functions of education (students, residents, fellows and continuing medical education), clinical services (primary care, tertiary care, avoidance, intensive care and long-term care), research (basic bench research, clinical trials and health systems), academic affairs/faculty development, and administration (finance and support services) are serviced through the operational divisions (reference organizational chart).

Job tasks Ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day functioning of research operations. Engages in long- and short-range planning with the Chairman and Clinical Administrative Managers to meet research goals. Identifies space and equipment for existing and new faculty. Provides input to the Clinical Administrative Managers on the annual budget for research. Meets with faculty candidates to show available laboratory facilities and equipment, both within and outside the Department of Internal Medicine. Provides advice, assistance or training to other investigators and research personnel in the department as a means of facilitating achievement of research goals and objectives. Serves as contact person for other department investigators/research personnel regarding Medicine's research equipment or facilities (i.e. loaning of equipment). Serves as a resource and provides support when needed to departmental support staff regarding space, Information technology equipment, and website updates. Maintains the shared research facilities (equipment room, the dark room, autoclave, freezer, and the cold rooms).

Ensures the maintenance of existing departmental equipment by: arranging for repairs on a timely basis, anticipating maintenance requirements/breakdowns, and training individuals on the proper use of laboratory equipment. Researches, assesses, and evaluates sources and obtains pricing for supplies and equipment needs for the shared research areas. Coordinates the relocation of laboratory equipment and office furniture within the laboratory facilities to meet the changing needs of research protocols or personnel needs. Serves as the departmental Fixed Asset coordinator covering both research and clinical equipment in the department as directed by the University Property Office (Fixed Assets) and the department's administrative personnel. Responsible for conducting inventories, identification/tagging, and equipment relocation for both research and clinical areas. As FA coordinator, serves as point of contact for departmental vans and clinical mobile trailer in addition to scheduling routine maintenance.

Serves as departmental administrator for PETS surplus system. Gathers the necessary paperwork for ordering equipment (Technology Assessment, Sole Source Justification, and administrative approvals). Serves as Safety Representative. Ensures all health and safety regulations are observed to ensure compliance. Trains research personnel in laboratory safety and the proper use of hazardous substance and biohazardous materials. Works closely with Environmental Health and Safety. The lead technician promotes open channels of communication, demonstrates sensitivity to work-related personal problems, and provides coaching to support research staff and students as needed. Aides on both short-term and long-term planning and prioritizing tasks connected with preparation of screening events. Assists in coordinating departures, arrivals, and vehicle reservation for screening team. Ensures the screening lab is adequately stocked with all the necessary materials and equipment to carry out screening events in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Maintains all screening equipment and connected documentation for quality control. Works closely with vendors to research, assess, and evaluate sources for pricing of supplies and equipment needed for screening events. Ensures expenditures stay within budget constraints while project is in progress. Identifies problems with equipment. Serve in adjunct function to the Director of the BSOM Imaging Core. This will include maintaining the equipment, serving as a resource to the faculty, staff, and student users. Will also provide training as needed to faculty, staff, and students.

Minimum Education/practice Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and practice. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation None

Preferred practice, expertise, Training/Education practice with common laboratory equipment and procedures. Working expertise in physiology, biochemistry or biology animal science as well as chemical and biosafety regulations.
