Primary Purpose of Department The Office of Discapability Services, a Division of Academic Affairs, works to ensure that students with disabilities have access to education and campus life at UNC Charlotte. Through collaboration with the institution's diverse community, Discapability Services facilitates accommodations, discourse, and engagement to promote a universally accessible learning environment for all. As part of a collaborative team working with growing population of 1000 students, our approach is strength-located, promoting independence and self-advocacy.

Primary Purpose of Position The Accommodation Coordinator in the Office of Discapability Services is responsible for determining eligibility for services; and, through the interactive process, planning reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities at UNC Charlotte. This position is part administrative, advocate, and outreach, and requires a strong expertise of the ADA, student rights, and confidentiality practices. We are a compliance-located office and the evaluation of practices and policies and the determination of appropriate accommodations are essential to this position.

Using a student-centered, inclusive approach, the Accommodation Coordinator: Works collaboratively with students, faculty/staff, and campus partners to help ensure access by covering physical and programmatic barriers to education; maintains a student caseload and provides continuing case management to new and returning students; and maintains accurate and up-to-date electronic records.

Summary of Position Responsibilities The Accommodation Coordinator is critical in providing access to students with disabilities. The essential job responsibilities are:
   » Provide direct student support services as part of a collaborative team.
   » Maintain caseload and provide continuing case management to students with disabilities.
   » Review documentation and meet with students to develop and coordinate the implementation of reasonable accommodations located on the current impact of the student's discapability and discussion with the student.
   » Maintain confidential records, including detailed case notes, in conformity with FERPA.
   » Manage and mitigate issues that arise regarding access and assist students in the resolution of difficulties that may arise with accommodations in the classroom or campus community.
   » Work collaboratively with the team to review processes, policies, and best practices in order to continually evaluate services.
   » Maintain working expertise of assistive technology that is used to address functional limitations or improve the functional capabilities of students with disabilities in the classroom.
   » Develop and present campus programs to raise consciousness and promote access.
   » Staff campus and departmental initiatives designed to address access on a large scale, including but not limited to new and transfer orientation events, open houses, final exams, and commencement.
   » Manage office initiatives and collaborations such as the Workforce Recruitment Program.
   » Maintain a strong expertise of the ADA, student rights, confidentiality practices, and evaluation practices for high-incidence disabilities.
   » Participate in departmental and committee meetings.
   » Support the Director by providing departmental leadership abilities and other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Education/practice
   » Master's degree in a human services field, including social work, counseling, rehabilitation counseling, or related field.
   » practice working with people with disabilities.
Preferred Education, expertise, expertise and practice
   » A minimum of 2 years of professional practice working with individuals with disabilities is required. Post-graduate practice is preferred.
   » practice working with individuals with disabilities who are post-high school is preferable; practice working with individuals with disabilities in a higher education setting is highly desirable.
   » Excellent oral and written communication expertise.
   » Excellent collaborative, problem-solving, planning, and organizational expertise are necessary.
   » Working expertise of the ADA and Section 504 as pertains to considering accommodations within a higher education setting.
   » expertise of FERPA is valuable.
   » expertise of assistive technology as accommodations is valuable.
