Posting DetailsPosition InformationPosting Number: 20112903 Position Title: Dean of Students FTE: 1.0 Employment type: Staff Department: Strategic Initiatives and Community Relations Position Summary Information Job Summary/Basic Function: About this function: Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs & Strategic Initiatives, the Dean of Students is responsible for policy development, administration, supervision of staff, budget development and oversight, program planning and implementation as well as providing strategic direction to departments and programs within the following areas, Greek Life, Housing and Residential Life, Student Conduct and Care, and Setzer Student Center. They will serve as chairperson of the LU Critical Assessment, Response and Evaluation Team and as advisor to the Student Government Association. The Dean of Students serves as an advocate for students and represents them when decisions that directly affect the students' education and well-being are considered. They coordinate and implement divisional initiatives and other tasks as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Strategic Initiatives. What You'll Do - Position Responsibilities Student Conduct & Care » Serves as chief student conduct and hearing agent. Will manage student conduct due processes. Trains hearing staff and hearing panels; adjudicates student code of conduct violations, follows up with all hearing and sanctioning processes. » Respond to emergencies, crisis, and mental health issues with Lamar students, work closely with Student Health Center, Housing & Residence Life and University Police to address student issues and student conduct. Participate in a 24 hours on-call response. » Work closely with students and appropriate student engagement and academic affairs on student medical withdrawal process. » Assist with the evacuation process of students living in residence halls to an off-site location for tropical storm or hurricane. » This position is classified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act and a responsible employee under Title IX. Other tasks may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university. » Assures compliance with significant laws and regulations within the Texas State University System (TSUS), and Student Conduct and Care as judicial matters and complaints/grievances are resolved expeditiously and professionally. | 40% Administration, Compliance, and Policy Development » Assists the Vice President of Student Affairs and Strategic Initiatives in establishing best practices. » Promptly and thoroughly communicate need-to-know issues with Vice President of Student Affairs and Strategic Initiatives. » Assures compliance with significant laws and regulations within the Texas State University System (TSUS), and Student Conduct and Care as judicial matters and complaints/grievances are resolved expeditiously and professionally. » Participate in and provide guidance where appropriate in the analysis, review, creation, and interpretation of policies and procedures related to students. » Reviews and updates policies, procedures, Student Handbook and Code of Student Conduct as approved by TSUS. | 30% Programming, Engagement, and Recruitment » Develops and implements programming that promotes and actively engages the campus community and coordinates annual planning and assessment activities in support of programming to remain responsive to student needs and guidance. » Engages in University activities focused on student recruitment to the University such as the Cardinal View recruitments, Involvement Fairs, summer Freshman and Transfer Orientation sessions. | 20% Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness » Directs the divisional assessment efforts, analyzes data to develop comprehensive learning results and institutional effectiveness. Assist in the development of goals, objectives, and timelines that match the institutional and divisional goals as outlined in the University's strategic plan. | 10% Key Competencies: » An knowledge and practice in working on retention initiatives across student affairs, academic and enrollment management. » Demonstrates a broad and clear knowledge of student development and the function of a care team and behavioral intervention approach to address student's needs and issues. · Knowledge of and practice as Information technology relates to assessment of student engagement divisional/departmental programs and services. » Strong interpersonal skills including the capability to foster positive working relations and partnerships within the University. » Excellent written and oral communication skills. Physical Requirements: » Moderate physical activity. Can require handling objects of average-weight up to 30 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (2) hours per day. » availability to work flexible schedule, which may include evening and weekend hours as required and emergency management and/or crisis management. » Willing to assist with the evacuation process of residence students to an off-site location for tropical storm or hurricane. » Must be able to remain in stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. » Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on computer and/or related office equipment. » Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces. » Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another. » Communicating with others to exchange information.
