Job Location Corvallis
Benefits Eligible Full-Time, benefits eligible

Job Summary This is an Internal Employment Opportunity.

This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research adjunct position in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences (FWCS) at Oregon State University (OSU). Appointment is located on annual contract, with reappointment at the discretion of the Department Head. The position reports to the Professor of Ichthyology and the Department Head.

This position includes maintaining the nationally and internationally recognized collections of Fishes, Birds, Mammals and Aquatic Invertebrates, which are held within the Department. The Oregon State Ichthyology Collection (OSIC) is the largest of these, holding approximately 250,000 specimens of preserved fishes, as well connected skeletal and genetic material. The OSIC is actively growing and heavily utilized for teaching and research on the diversity of marine and freshwater fishes in the Pacific Northwest, as well as other regions of the world. All four collections support broad educational and outreach programs for the public. The approximately 10,000 specimens in the Mammalogy Collection, the 9000 specimens in the Ornithology Collection and 5000 specimens in the Aquatic Invertebrate Collection represent important regional resources that support teaching of evolution and systematics as well as the study and identification of Oregon's biodiversity.

In addition to primary tasks of maintaining and cataloging the fish collection and handling requests for specimen loans, the incumbent will: conduct collection tours and outreach programs for prospective students and the public; train and direct undergraduate teaching adjuncts and collections adjuncts; develop and teach a fish identification course through the Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) program; instruct up to one online course per year; lead or contribute to scholarly work related to teaching, outreach or research that uses or expands the natural history collections; and provide service to the department, university and profession.

The Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences is an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Department is composed of approximately 300 staff - including faculty, research adjuncts, support staff, graduate students, temporary staff and undergraduate students.

Approximately $9 million of externally funded research grants/contracts are received each year by FWCS researchers. Major cooperator and funding sources include most state and federal resources agencies. Cooperation is formalized through the department's participation in the Oregon Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

The mission of the Department is to discover, integrate and disseminate expertise about wildlife and fisheries resources, as well as ecosystems and human communities with which they interrelate. Information technology accomplishes this through an interconnected program of 1) undergraduate and graduate education; 2) scholarly research; and 3) extended education.

College of Agricultural Sciences faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality academics, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning opportunities. Positions with primary responsibility for extension and outreach are likewise committed to learner success through programming appropriate for diverse audiences. There is an expectation that, as part of their function in the college, the incumbent will embody and advance the principles and practices conveyed in the CAS CARE Commitment document.

We seek a colleague who has a demonstrable commitment to working and promoting inclusion of people from diverse backgrounds in research, education, and outreach. OSU is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer, and especially encourages applications from members of historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, women, individuals with disabilities, veterans, LGBTQ+ community members, and others who demonstrate the capability to help us achieve our vision of inclusive excellence. OSU is committed to creating and maintaining compassionate and inclusive learning and working environments for all learners, visitors, and employees. Faculty members in the College of Agriculture design, develop, maintain, or carry out Extension programs that serve diverse populations, including those that have been historically marginalized.

For more information on our commitment to inclusive excellence, see https://extension.oregonstate.edu/about/diversity-equity-inclusion and https://leadership abilities.oregonstate.edu/president/moving-forward-together.
