The Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station (COMES) invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research adjunct position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.

This position is responsible for managing and executing several different types of projects performed in Dr. Susanne Brander's Ecotoxicology and Environmental Stress lab. The incumbent will primarily be responsible for managing microplastics extraction projects funded by grants or contracts. This will involve receipt of a variety of different sample types, from sediment to water or biota, which will be extracted and processed for microplastics quantification. The position will be responsible for designing new protocols and for training adjuncts, either undergraduates or temporary employees, on protocol execution. They will collect, analyze, and write up data in the form of reports or manuscripts. This position will also occasionally help to design and execute experiments intended for the exposure of organisms (fish, invertebrates) to various aquatic stressors (e.g. microplastics, altered abiotic factors, pesticides). This individual is expected to manage at least 1-2 undergraduate students, and in some cases will manage and/or work alongside a lab technician. The incumbent will occasionally be involved in conducting field sampling, which may involve going out on a boat to collect water or biota for analyses in the lab or sampling from terrestrial field sites such as agricultural areas or coastal areas.

This position is located in Newport, OR.

As a member of the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station (COMES), the incumbent will be expected to work closely with coastal communities and federal, state, and private organizations in support of the COMES mission ?to understand, utilize, and sustain marine resources and coastal ecosystems in order to benefit the citizens of Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, the Nation, and the World.? What You Will Need
   » Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, with 1-2 years of post-grad laboratory and/or field work practice (or equivalent lab or field practice during undergraduate degree).
   » practice working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with diverse groups of students, researchers, and staff.
   » capability to clearly communicate scientific concepts, findings, and results for diverse audiences.
   » Demonstrated capability to contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming workplace environment for individuals with a wide variety of different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and/or life practices.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

   » Weekend work is required, often 1-2 weekends per month. Work over holiday periods is required but rotated among breeding program staff.
   » Field work may be conducted in inclement weather and at odd hours to accommodate tide cycles.
