Job Summary The Fisheries, Wildlife, & Conservation Sciences is seeking a salaried Academic Wage: Faculty Research adjunct. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term position. This position is anticipated to last approximately ten months.

This is a collaborative project researching juvenile Chinook salmon and steelhead life history tactics. This project entails research to (1) determine the morphological, physiological, and behavioral phenotypes of wild Chinook salmon and steelhead trout as Information technology relates to juvenile migratory performance, and (2) develop strategies whereby such phenotypes could be produced through controlled hatchery rearing. The incumbent will help coordinate sampling and data collection, assist with fish rearing and organization, analyzing data, and participate in writing proposal, reports, and manuscripts.

FWCS is an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Department is composed of approximately 300 staff, including academic faculty, research adjuncts, classified staff, graduate students, and temporary staff. Over $8 million of externally funded grants and contracts are received each year in support of science focused on basic ecological research, conservation, and sustainable use of fish and wildlife and their habitats. The Department is the largest in the College of Agricultural Sciences, with over 1000 students in 8 degree and certificate programs, including one Bachelor of Science degree, five graduate degrees, and two graduate certificates.

Key Responsibilities 35% Fish Rearing. This includes rearing and monitoring large numbers of fish in various experimental treatment groups, as requested by facility users. This will entail feeding, cleaning, monitoring water quality, and recognizing disease outbreaks. As a research facility, fish rearing must be adaptable to various reasonable requests (e.g. growth trajectories, density variation, diet manipulations, temperature and flow manipulations, etc.).

30% Data management, analyses and reporting. Responsibilities will include organization and management of data for research and monitoring of research projects and rearing of wild fish surrogates, analysis of data, and interpretation of results. Report results to public and stakeholders and co-author papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Assist with reports for funding agency and peer-reviewed papers, and present results and findings to funding agency and appropriate fisheries management agencies when needed and at scientific meetings. Communicate inclusively with a diverse audience in order to support reporting and dissemination of research.

20% Data collection at hatchery facilities and field sites. Will organize and conduct fish sampling at research hatchery facilities, as well as sampling of fish in collaboration with state fish biologists at state hatcheries and field sites. Monitor and test fish at research hatchery facilities. This includes designing and carrying out experimental research to answer questions about juvenile life history and improve rearing of wild fish surrogates and assisting with fish rearing at research hatchery facilities.

15% Sample analysis in laboratory setting including assays, PCR, general laboratory and lab equipment maintenance and function.

Driving is required to travel to research sites. The position will require frequent travel to research hatchery facilities, state hatcheries, and field sites within the Willamette River basin.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You to Have Masters degree in fisheries, fish ecology, physiology, natural resources, zoology or related field

Previous fieldwork practice knowledge of fisheries biology/management and prior practice working with salmonids; practice using Excel and/or Access worksheets for data entry, checking data, and generation of graphics;

practice using quantitative applications and conducting statistical programming® sound knowledge of juvenile salmonid life history patterns

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Work takes place at the Fish Performance and Genetics Lab, various production hatcheries, and Nash Hall on the campus of Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Work can also be conducted via electronic communication from areas other than previously described at discretion of PI.
