Primary Purpose of Department The University Ombuds program serves as an independent, confidential, impartial, and informal resource that adheres to the International Ombuds Association's code of ethics and standards of practice. Information technology serves as a confidential resource to help all members of the UNC Charlotte community, including faculty, staff, and students, to informally work through challenging problems, dilemmas, and conflicts. UNC Charlotte has designated the University Ombuds office as a confidential resource, which encompasses all personnel assigned to the office, for the purposes of Title IX, and is not designated as a campus security authority as defined in the Clery Act. Primary Purpose of Position The UNC Charlotte is seeking to fill the position of Associate University Ombuds, which reports to, and is supervised by the University Ombuds. The incumbent will be primarily dedicated to providing ombuds services to undergraduate students.

The Associate University Ombuds uses interest-located techniques to help prevent problems from escalating and empowers visitors to find productive, collaborative solutions. In coordination and consultation with the University Ombuds, the Associate University Ombuds draws insights from individual cases and interactions in order to highlight, and communicate to campus leadership abilities, opportunities for systemic change and institutional progress. The Associate University Ombuds routinely handles highly complex and challenging matters and must exercise sound judgment, discretion, sensitivity, and the highest level of professionalism. The Associate University Ombuds works independently yet under the overall direction of and in close consultation with, the University Ombuds.

Summary of Position Responsibilities
   » Promote an ombuds program that is voluntary for students and helps empower them to address concerns in collaborative, interest-located ways
   » Listen to understand students' issues, interests, and needs from multiple perspectives
   » Serve as a thought partner with students to help explore the range of options available to them, think through the pros and cons of the various choices, and help students come to a decision on how to proceed
   » Empower students to deal with their issues directly by helping them improve their expertise and confidence in giving voice to their concerns
   » Refer students to appropriate resolution resources, including formal resources as appropriate
   » Use informal, interest-located techniques to help facilitate informal resolution between students and among student organizations
   » Provide insight into new and emerging issues, as well as possible resolution options, improvements to policies and processes, and systemic change
   » Assist in compiling broad, de-identified information about the Ombuds program and usage (annually or biennially), including data, trends, or reports, in a manner that protects confidential information and is consistent with generally accepted organizational Ombuds practices
   » Assist in maintaining an informational website, as well as producing significant publications and employing other communication methods to inform students, student organizations, and campus stakeholders about the purpose and function of the Office of the University Ombuds
   » Other tasks and responsibilities consistent with the University Ombuds Charter
Minimum Education/practice Candidates must possess an advanced degree, such as a Master's degree, JD or PhD.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, expertise and practice
   » Three to five years of significant practice, preferably in the higher education setting
   » capability to work independently and with adherence to principles of confidentiality, informality, impartiality, and independence. A well-developed knowledge of the function of an organizational ombuds function; working knowledge of mediation, facilitation, coaching, and other interest-located techniques and principles;
   » Excellent communication and interpersonal expertise, including written, oral, listening, and presentation, with a demonstrated capability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels
   » Excellent presentation expertise, including the capability to develop and deliver educational sessions
   » capability to gather, analyze, synthesize, and clearly present information and analyze data
   » Excellent problem-solving expertise, with capability to synthesize and present a range of options and approaches to facilitate conflict resolution
   » capability to work independently, effectively and efficiently in a high-paced environment, preferably in the higher education setting, appropriately balancing deadlines and multiple stakeholder viewpoints
   » capability to effectively engage and respond to stakeholders at all levels of an organization to improve climate and results
   » capability to adhere to the highest professional standards of honesty, integrity, confidentiality, and discretion in highly sensitive situations
   » Commitment to being a collaborative team partner committed to supporting departmental goals, objectives, and initiatives
   » Membership in the International Ombuds Association, including completion of the IOA Foundations course, or commitment to obtain membership and complete training as soon as practicable, with the goal of achieving ombuds certification when eligible
