Job Summary This is an Internal Employment Opportunity The College of Liberal Arts, School of Writing, Literature, and Film, invites applications for a combined position as Director of Writing and adjunct Professor of Teaching. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, combined professional faculty and fixed term position. This position provides administrative oversight and coordination of the School of Writing, Literature, and Film's Writing Program and its core functions, principally with respect to the Core Ed's Writing Foundations (WR 121Z), but also including courses in the Writing Elevation category where appropriate. The Director of Writing will develop, maintain, assess, and evolve the WR 121Z curriculum in alignment with research-backed pedagogies and composition theories; design and supervise teacher training curricula and mentoring, including GTA Professional Development Sequence and Teaching Practica for WR 121Z and WR 227Z, for all modalities and campuses. They will supervise assessment of Writing Foundations and Writing Elevation, all in coordination with Lead Instructors. In addition, they'll serve as primary contact for student conduct issues arising in significant courses; contact with Lead Instructors and representatives across campus in coordinating Writing Elevation curricula; supervise adjunct Director of Writing in assigned administrative tasks (e.g., refereeing waiver exams, plagiarism cases, course equivalency requests, and assistance in teacher training and mentoring, etc.); and supervise and mentor GTAs with FTE assigned to Writing Program. The Director of Writing will be expected to collaborate with SWLF administration on scheduling and staffing, and to represent the Writing Program across the unit, college, University, and State, including active participation in the Oregon Writing and English Advisory Committee (OWEAC), serving on significant committees where appropriate. The academic faculty portion of this position consists of teaching, research, and service. The teaching load is eight courses over three quarters annually. Teaching responsibilities include lower-division undergraduate composition courses, upper-division courses in writing and/or rhetoric, and/or graduate seminars in rhetoric, composition, literacy, and social media. Mentoring of students is expected, including advising of graduate students in our MA program in Rhetoric and Composition track. We seek a candidate whose scholarship adds to the intellectual vibrancy of our community, and that shows potential for distinction in their field. The position includes mentoring and support for advancing one's scholarship. Service includes committee-work for the School, College, and University. Expectations in Teaching: Instruction in and development/design of both on-campus and Ecampus undergraduate and graduate courses. Core assignments will focus on Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy Studies, and may include WR 517, WR 121, WR 323, WR 303, and/or WR 497, but may vary as enrollment patterns and School curricula shift. Mentorship and advising of students at all levels is expected, including serving as reader or chair on graduate thesis committees. Teaching tasks include timely correspondence with students, and such correspondence is expected even after the conclusion of the term if any outstanding issues (grade disputes, other administrative matters) from the course remain unresolved. Expectations in Research: A sustained record of scholarly achievement in the primary fields of Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy Studies, as evidenced by the publication of articles in refereed journals, digital scholarship such as archives and editions, and/or scholarly monographs. Public humanities work, such as essays and articles, can also serve as evidence of scholarly achievement. Interdisciplinary scholarship, outreach, and engagement mark ways of demonstrating the relevance of the work to the humanities disciplines at large and outside the walls of the University. Delivering papers at regional/national/international conferences constitutes evidence of professional research and scholarly activity in progress toward publication. Expectations in Service: Provide service to the School, the College, and/or the University, its students and its faculty. Service assignments typically come in the form of appointments to standing or ad hoc committees, but may also include special projects. Professional development in assigned teaching areas through OSU or external workshops/meetings may be counted as service.
