Rural Policy Reporter

KUFM- Montana Public Radio (MTPR) invites applications for a Rural Policy Reporter (Media Programmer) to add depth to coverage of state government decisions impacting rural residents of Montana. You will regularly travel long distances in the state to bring coverage to MTPR's audience and distribution partners. During legislative sessions, you will contribute to MTPR's everyday statehouse coverage.

This position can work remotely in Montana or at MTPR's station in Missoula.

Examples of tasks and Responsibilities

   » News research using internet, newspapers, and other news sources.
   » Develop and maintain news sources.
   » Meet content quotas
   » Collaborate with content partners
   » Produce and deliver newscast reports and feature length stories using field recording kits, audio equipment and computers.
   » Upload audio, video, and text content to website, podcasting platforms, and social media platforms as appropriate.
   » Drive long distances.
   » Regular, multi-day reporting trips
   » Represent Montana Public Radio while traveling and answer public inquiries about the station and news policy.

Minimum Qualifications

   » expertise of journalism ethics and standards of fairness and balance.
   » Excellent speaking and writing expertise.
   » capability to research and comprehend complex issues, and translate them into clear, concise news reports.
   » Driver's license
   » capability to interview, record, write and digitally edit audio, video and still photography files.
   » Professional demeanor and behavior and capability to interact with a wide variety of people.
   » capability to post audio, video and photography online across multiple platforms.
   » capability to convert radio broadcast content to online reports.
   » capability to execute under deadline pressures and highly emotional circumstances.
Preferred Qualifications
   » Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related fields
   » Two (2) years of practice in a reporting function, preferably in public radio or television

Additional Information

Position Number: 777870
Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week)

Probationary Period: Six (6) months minimum
