SUMMARY:
Texas Public Radio (TPR) is a mission-driven, award-winning multimedia organization serving hundreds of thousands of listeners through seven radio stations across Texas. TPR delivers top-quality content via radio broadcast, video and audio streaming, digital networks, and live events, collaborating with other media organizations to produce rich content and programming.
We are pursuing a skilled and motivated individual to join our FM broadcasting facility as an adjunct Broadcast Engineer. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with a diverse range of broadcasting equipment and systems, including seven transmitters all over Central and South Texas. This position will also provide technical support to studios, offer Information technology support, and assist in facility maintenance. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise, a passion for broadcasting technology, and a commitment to ensuring the smooth operation of our FM broadcast operations.
tasks AND Job responsibilities:
•Transmitter Maintenance: Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of seven FMtransmitters across Central and South Texas, ensuring optimal performance andcompliance with regulatory standards.
•System Monitoring: Monitor the performance of broadcasting systems, includingtransmitters, antennas, transmission lines, and audio processing equipment, to identifyand address any issues promptly.
•Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve technical problems related to broadcastingequipment and systems, utilizing diagnostic tools and troubleshooting techniques tominimize downtime.
•Emergency Response: Respond to equipment failures and technical emergenciespromptly, implementing contingency plans to maintain uninterrupted broadcastingoperations.
•Equipment Installation: Assist in the installation, configuration, and testing of newbroadcasting equipment, including transmitters, antennas, and related infrastructure.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, repairs, and system configurations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices.
• RF Compliance: Ensure compliance with FCC regulations and industry standards for RF emissions, transmitter power output, and antenna height to minimize interference and ensure the integrity of our broadcast signals.
• Collaboration: Work closely with broadcast engineers, technicians, and other staff members to support live broadcasts, special events, and programming initiatives.
• Training and Support: Provide technical support and training to broadcasting staff on equipment operation, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols.
• Quality Assurance: Conduct regular checks and tests to verify the quality and relicapability of broadcast signals, audio processing, and transmission systems.
• Tech Support: Offer comprehensive Information technology support to staff, covering hardware and software issues promptly.
• Stay updated on technological advancements and recommend upgrades for efficiency.
• Support facility maintenance, including HVAC and electrical systems.
• Coordinate with external contractors for specialized maintenance tasks.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations to maintain a secure working environment.
• Participate in on-call rotation for 24/7 emergency support.
• Update wiring, labeling, and documentation to current standards.
• Ensure compliance with FCC Rules and Regulations to protect broadcasting licenses.
• Participate in station fundraising, sponsorship activities, and live events.
• Fulfill administrative obligations related to documentation and expense reports.
suitable education
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Broadcasting Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practice). SBE Certification preferred.
practice:
Minimum of three years technical practice in broadcast station operations preferred.
expertise & Appropriate qualifications:
• Strong troubleshooting expertise and the capability to diagnose and resolve technical problems efficiently.
• Self-motivated, with the capability to work efficiently with limited supervision.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal expertise, with the capability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Exceptional organizational and time management expertise.
• Excellent oral and written communication expertise.
• Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed for maintenance and special events.
• Valid Class C driver's license and capability to travel on short notice. Must have a reliable personal vehicle for local trips.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED expertise:
practice working with FM broadcasting equipment, including transmitters, antennas, and audio processing systems.
Familiarity with digital audio storage, radio broadcast automation, and traffic systems.
expertise of FCC regulations and industry standards for FM broadcasting.
IT expertise including troubleshooting, networking, and desktop support.
