The Committee of 1926 and Historic Strawberry MansionHistoric Strawberry Mansion seeks a historic house museum tour guide. Built in 1789 for abolitionist Judge William Lewis, Historic Strawberry Mansion is a major landmark of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. Once an upper-class private residence, the house opened its doors in the 1930s as a museum for the wider public to enjoy, administered by the Committee of 1926- an organization born out of the Women's Committee at Philadelphia's 1926 Sesquicentennial International Exposition that continues to operate the museum to this day. Some of the museum's focuses are: 18th and 19th century decorative arts; early US history and everyday life; the movement to abolish slavery in Pennsylvania; and women-led civic organizing in early 20th century Philadelphia. Tour guides are vital to the museum's mission to share all of the above with the public.Listing description This listing is for a tour guide position. Tour guides at Historic Strawberry Mansion lead groups of visitors through the premises while explaining the history and contents of each room. They are responsible for greeting visitors, taking payment, and recording numbers of visitors and amount paid in a everyday log. Guides will need to cultivate a strong expertise of the house, its collections, and their historical context in order to deliver informative and historically accurate tours and answer follow-up questions from visitors. Requirements: An ideal candidate will have a love of history, and the capability to study and remember the history of Historic Strawberry Mansion. This position would be best suited for someone who is confident in their speaking expertise, enjoys working with the public, and is comfortable speaking for the duration of a 30-60 minute tour and answering questions afterwards. Prior practice as a guide, docent, or reenactor (whether professional or volunteer) is not a requirement but is a major plus. Hours: Museum hours are Thursday-Sunday, 10 AM-4 PM. Our season is April-December (we are closed to the public January-March and guides do not work during those months). The candidate hired will be one of two guides on staff, and will have the option to alternate days with the other guide (e.g., work Thursdays and Fridays for one month and Saturdays and Sundays the next month- candidates' availcapability can be discussed in more detail if called in for an interview). There is also flexibility for taking time off or switching shifts between guides- just discuss on a case-by-case basis. Compensation: This is an hourly position compensated at $20/hour with an average of 12 hours/week, paid bimonthly.
