Job Summary Oregon State University's Ship Operations unit within the College of Earth, Oceanic, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for future full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, hourly academic wage (as needed) Relief Chief Mate positions. Appointments are anticipated to last up to one year from appointment date. The Chief Mate assists in the operation and maintenance of the Research Vessel (R/V) Taani under the immediate supervision of the Ship's Master in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. The Chief Mate is second in command to the Master and supervises the work of the vessel's deck department in addition to standing watch. Why OSU? Key Responsibilities 50% - Stands watch as agent of the Watch at sea under direction of the Ship's Master. Navigates by use of electronic equipment and other means. Maneuvers the vessel as necessary to conduct oceanographic work. Writes logs. Uses navigational charts. Conducts shipboard and ship-to-shore communications. Carries out ship's everyday routine. At the direction of the Master, functions as lead for emergency response drills. 20% - Organizes, directs, trains and supervises (hires/fires or effectively recommends; plans, assigns and approves work; disciplines and compensates; evaluates performance; and responds to grievances for direct reports) the deck department in the operation and maintenance of departmental equipment and spaces: cranes, winches, wire rope and cable, ground tackle, rigging, frames, boats, decks, bulkheads, hull, blocks, lines, etc. 10% - Operates radios, radars, electronic navigation equipment, fathometers, ship control equipment, winches, cranes, boats, and research support equipment as necessary. 10% - As second in command, assists the Master in the overall operation and administration of the vessel. Leads the ship's routine in-port and is in overall charge of the vessel during Master's absence. 5% - Directs firefighting party and provides First Aid when necessary. Maintains ship's medicine chest and acts as medical provider. 5% - Ensures all equipment and cargo is secured for sea in conformity with vessel trim and stcapability requirements. What We Would Like You to Have » U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with the rating of 1600 ton Master or better. » Dynamic Positioning Operator, Limited Certificate. » ECDIS Certificate. » At least one year of managery practice. » Research vessel practice. Working Conditions / Work Schedule The employee in this position is required to work on board OSU operated research vessels at sea on research cruises that may last from one day to three weeks or more before returning to port, in ocean and weather conditions which are highly variable. The incumbent must not be incapacitated by sea-sickness. The capability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds is required. Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation; therefore, weekend and holiday work may be required. Shift and/or work assignment may change located on operational needs. In the event of health risks to the working environment while at sea, Ship Operations may need to require quarantine periods and other health & safety requirements before employees join the vessel or begin work at sea to ensure continuity of business operations.
